So I have seen the rivet stage trick done several times on an official DK machine and I know how to do it cause I have done it on the official machine.
When I try on mame, it doesnt work? Is an "officially" recognized Twin Galaxies machine running a different rom set than the mame US 1 version?
Thanks

Twin Galaxies uses set 2, I do believe.

what is this rivet trick you speak of?

I assume he's talking about jumping next to Donkey Kong for points. It works on my 48/1. I was shocked to see Wiebe using that trick. I thought that it was against TG rules. Apparently not!

oh...if that is the case, it works on US set 1 in mame .124

Oh, I forgot to address the actual question: I've done the trick in US 1 and 2 sets. Make sure when you jump, you press away from Kong right after you're airborne. (You can press toward him as well, but I don't advise it)

That jumping next to Kong's foot is allowed since there's a timer. If there was no timer, it wouldn't be allowed. You can pretty much jump next to any enemy and grab 100 ponits like that. Barrels coming down ladders, fireballs, in front of a pie, next to the spring as it passes by, etc. The one next to Kong's foot is probably a bug though, but if you get close enough to his foot, you don't even have to push the joystick. It's easy enough to do it by pushing the joystick though, and is much safer that way :) From what I understand, when you push the joystick after jumping, it makes the enemy detection area around Mario much larger, so he would get points jumping over things. Using it to jump next to objects was probably an unintended outcome.
As far as ROM sets, for the US version, TG tracks set 1, not set 2. Set 2 is the one that only says "Nintendo" instead of "Nintendo of America" on the title screen, and also has the ladder bug, where you can sit at the top of a ladder, and the barrels won't come down on you. (if you ever come across a machine "in the wild" that just says "Nintendo", you'll know it's set 2 ;D )
(edit: changed set 1 and 2 around...TG actually tracks set 1. set 2 is the older set, called dkongo)

Some of those "cheats" are not really cheats if the level is on a timer. One thing I was wondering about was stuff like in Galaga or Galaga '88. I take it the Challenging Stages have to be completed properly? In other words... you cant just sit there motionless and collect the top "secret" bonus?

I just did the jump trick on DK with set 1, .104 . However, I could only do it on the right side, and I think I had to get close when DK wasn't sticking his foot that direction. But I didn't have to be right next to him.

I was wondering what the point of the jump trick next to DK's foot is. The average jump takes about one second, which is the same score you'd get for getting the bonus on the clock anyway for one second.

You can actually make the jumps faster than the timer counts down. It's definitely the way to go if you are trying for points.

As you get higher, the clock ticks faster, so it becomes less advantageous to do it. If it doesn't take alot of time to get up there to do it, you can still make points even on higher levels, just not as much. I think on level 1, you get 100 points per .4 of a clock tick. I know you can get more than 200 per clock tick. Level 2 is less than that, level 3 is even less, and after that, it's not really worth it. As far as where to do it, as long as one of Mario's feet is within the vertical blue line (holding up the top platform over Kong's head), on either side of Kong, jumping and pushing the stick at the right time should award you 100 points. To get the points without pushing the stick, you move close to Kong and basically go toe-to-toe with him on either side. It's not very easy to do though, so it's not recommended you do it that way ;D

Oh. I forgot to try the stick pushing method. I just got close and jumped, but like I said wasn't right up close to him - which, come to mind, I saw on a vid a while back and wondered about, because before then, I'd only done it bum ---smurfing--- close. Also, on level 1, doesn't the clock count slower than seconds?
