Is there anyway to calibrate or adjust a 49-way midway type joystick. I got one that acts as if you are pressing up all the time. And if you pull down just a hair bit.. I mean a tiny tiny hair bit it centers but you can't release it or it's back to thinking it's pushed up. I have found that these things are sensative as can be and I'm wonding if there is a way to re-calibrate them to reset the neutral position.
I'm guessing not, but I thought Id ask anyways.

Make sure your wiring is correct before you do anything else. These are digital sticks, so having a wire where it's not supposed to be, might actually be sending the "up" code, instead of the "center" code, etc...
If things really are wired propery, you may be able to gently adjust the position of the optical sensor.
Also, make sure that the rubber grommet is centered and that it hasn't been shifted somehow. Could also cause a problem.

I have found that if my 49-way is not perfectly centered when I power up, it will ignore the cardinal directions. My 49 ways both tend to center slightly off-center, even with the GGG grommet upgrades.
In Windows, you can view/test your calibration details under the game devices icon, but there is no re-calibration option.

This is due to the auto 49-way type ID. There are Williams and Midway/HAPP types. If it's off center at power on, it won't correctly identify the joystick type. This is, of course, assuming use with a GP-Wiz49 interface.

Mine are 49-Way Midway style in a dedicated Blitz/Showtime Sportstation machine. It uses the I-40 Interface board. I've changed the wiring around to see if the problem follows the wiring or the stick. It stays with the stick so it's definitely the stick. I took the stick apart and the grommet is pretty dried up looking. It's solid, but dried out looking. I just don't know if I should replace the Grommet, the IC-OPTO board or just replace the whole thing and be done with it..

Is it cracking or showing signs of dry-rot? Is the stick "sloppy", possibly from the bushing in the grommet being worn? Either of these things might also be causing it to rest slightly off center.
