That's almost exactly what I did over a year ago. Still works great.

So if I'm reading that correctly, the idea is to take an optical mouse, gut it and put a spinner knob attached to a wheel that's marked in some fashion, the mount the mouse guts over the wheel upside down, so essentially, the "desk" is moving under the mouse, right?
That's a slick idea, and very simple.

Very nice indeed! What did you use for the disc that the mouse tracks on?

Doesnt this introduce some Vertical movement as well?
It would be the equivalent of rolling your mouse in a circle.
I think it may be better if the wheel tracked was made to be vertical.
And that way, you wouldnt have any other direction being sensed / activated.
