Does anyone know any details on his DK record attempt today? It is supposed to be broadcast on G4, but I can't find any info on it. A live webcast would be nice like that Nibbler attempt a few weeks ago.
-
I watched way too much Nibbler, but if there was a feed, I'd watch his Donkey Kong attempt, too (at least that's only about 2 1/2 hours).
-
G4 was playing the DK movie last night...Ive never cared for E3, but when i heard Steve is going to try and beat the score...I think I'm going to watch it...
I think they should have it where if Steve beats the score...Billy has to cut off the ape drape... :laugh2:
GO STEVE!!!!
speaking of DK...what version does everyone mostly play ( or even Steve)? US or Japan version?
Japan has the levels in order, while the US skips differnt levels...
-
There are differences in the US version 1 and version 2 boards, as well. I think the version 1 board will keep barrels from coming down a ladder if you're on it. (Not sure, but I think that's the difference)
My prediction: Wiebe loses again. (And he doesn't even crack 900,000)

You're half wrong already... He just passed 900k on his first game.
-
But are there "wild barrels" ?!? ;D

Plenty of them... His first game ended a few minutes ago. 923,400.
-
Is he expected to play more than the one game ?

They said he's playing 2 more, but there are 3 credits left on the machine. :)
-
For those of you who don't know Steve Wiebe was the star in a documentary/movie called "A Fist Full of Quarters". Look it up if you haven't seen it.
-
If anyone here doesn't know about King Of Kong, they're probably on this forum by accident. :)

I'm glad he proved me wrong. I hope he DOES win, but "Billy Mitchell always has a plan" :D
-
Billy has a mysterious tape ready to turn in when the time is right. ;)
Looks like Steve is sitting down getting ready to go again.
-
Wouldnt it be funny to see Billy Mitchell fly in from the rafters wearing a huge american flag cape and insert the tape in a VCR sitting beside the cab ...He pops the tape in and turns ( slow motion) and look at the camera...his mullet swaying in the air...he throws a thumbs up and exclaims " Thats why I have USA as my initals.....Booyah!" :laugh2:
-
He got a kill screen on his last attempt and had about 938k I think, dunno how he did on his second attempt.
I believe they said this is the first 900+ score Wiebe has posted in person (which he did twice), and perhaps the first ever since Billy has resorted to tapes.
Pretty cool that he got to a kill screen though, since there's only so many people who can do that, and he did it on a real stage, with TV checking in on him, and internet streaming the whole thing.
Hes a hell of a player.
-
The score was 985,400 from my recollection... kill screen on his 3rd attempt. Well, his 2nd 3rd attempt. The first time around for his 3rd attempt the power went out at around 250K points. He had to start over. He also made it to the kill screen with an extra man left over...
The 1st game he got around 890K then game over. The 2nd game he got to around 680K then game over from my recollection.
-
2nd game was approx 680k.
-
2nd game was approx 680k.
Corrected...
-
1st - 923,400
2nd - died @14k and killed himself off to start over
3rd - 653,700
4th - 989,400
Sound about right?
-
this guy is just ridiculous...even though he didn't take the world record, it is still amazing to watch him. my boss and I play a few rounds of donkey kong just about every day, i finally knocked him completely off of the high score table the other day, but my high score is still just over 100,000. i dont know how this guy does it

If you remember watching the movie....he took a pexiglass pen and drew every line and possible approch that the barrells, springs everything...There was even some way that he would move mario and doing it would make the barrels either go or not go down ladders....
Donkey Kong is a fun game...but it BLOWS my mind how a man can break it down to 10001110101 (binary)...
Even with Pac-man players have found out that there is a pattern that the ghosts take according to which pac-man moves you do...
Tells ya how smart i am...I thought u was just suppose to run like hell and find the nearest power pellet

Those things arent that difficult, I can help you with them.
The first one, the springs have several flight patterns, the important one is the one which bounces the furthest in to DK's foot. If you sit and watch the springs, just watch where they hit on DK's foot, you will see there is one that is the longest.
When that spring hits, Steve starts to run Mario toward the ladder, but keeps his focus on the springs. If another long one comes as the next spring, you have to run back, it will hit you on the ladder. Thats why you will see him start to run, then go back, sometimes several times, until he goes. Hes waiting for the random pattern of a long spring, followed by a short one.
As to barrel control, how it works (past level 1), is that if you are pushing Left or Right on the stick, ALL barrels above you will go down the next ladder they hit that is that direction. It doesnt work on every barrel every time, but it usually will work. This way you can force barrels to go down ladders that wont hurt you, and you can time barrels to give you better jumping/smashing patterns.
You can also push left or right when on ladders, or mid jump to control the barrels as well.
Getting the control takes practice, but doing it as well as Steve does is masterful.

Man that is just "crazy" I never thought that when i was growing up ( born in 75) with the games and playing them at the arcade and atari ( that was the closest I was able to play DK)
Last night after i watched KoKong...I went and played DK on the mame cab... :burgerking:
-
After King of Kong came out on DVD, I bought my cabinet within a week of seeing it and got started on my MAME cab.
-
There was also some archive footage of him, I think at a TG thing, Walter Day in the background, and Wiebe cracked a million.
-
I was watching the G4 event off and on and was amazed at how well Wiebe does....its amazing. I finally watched King of Kong... and boy does Billy Mitchell seem like a --cream-filled twinkie--. What a little weasel at Funspot, the Mitchell cult follower, delivering the tape and constantly looking over Wiebe's shoulder....creepy.
I hope like hell Wiebe keeps trying gets the record, live. That may finally cause the shady Billy Mitchell to come out of hiding and compete live, I honestly dont think Mitchell could do it under the pressure Wiebe does it in.
Go Team Wiebe! Keep trying!

What a little weasel at Funspot, the Mitchell cult follower, delivering the tape
The tape was a bounty and it arrived before Steve did. No one knew for sure he was even coming. Anyone who could beat the score on that tape would win $10,000 from Billy.
You need to read up on how much of that movie isn't true.

Well that was an interesting read with the additional information and makes Twin Galaxies appear more impartial than they looked on the movie.
However, I stand by my statement, that Billy Mitchell still comes off looking like a --cream-filled twinkie-- (sorry for not censoring the comment initilally) , his comments and arrogance on film are still his comments and arrogance. And they other guy who wants to be Billy Mitchell is still a creepy weasel.
-
Keep in mind:
The arrogance is an act. Just part of the character he puts out there.
The comments most of the time are out of context to make him look bad. For instance, when he says that the way to prove yourself is to show up and do it live, he isn't talking about the Funspot event. He's talking about the 1982 photoshoot where guys like Steve Sanders had to come prove themselves, and be outted as liars. (Though Sanders is good at DK and even wrote the book "How to Win at Donkey Kong")
Take note of the scene when Billy is on the phone with Brian Kuh, and watch his phone change. They spliced together different conversations.
I still love the movie, but there is a lot more I could point out that is wrong in that movie. (Like the restaurant scene...)
-
How about when he goes into the arcade in Florida and says something to the effect that "There are certain people he doesn't want to be around" (or associated with, I forget the exact quote)?
If the film-makers wanted to make Mitchell look like an a-hole, he sure made their job easy.

Yeah, thats one of the scenes that really stuck out and made Billy appear to be a real arrogant jerk. The words came out of his mouth, no editting needed. If they were "friendly" at one point in time.... it doesnt seem like it was the case when that was filmed. Perhaps thats all part of Billys "act", who knows, still a movie worth watching.
-
I have seen the explanation of what really went down in that scene, but I'm fuzzy on the details.

Right, it doesn't make sense (and there's a reason for that, which I'm unable to go into at the moment).

It all started one day when Steve finished a game of Donkey Kong at the local arcade and put another quarter in to play a second game, even though Billy had CLEARLY put his quarter on the dashboard, indicating it was his turn next. Steve clearly violated arcade etiquette and the price he paid was Billy's friendship. From that day forward, the pain curdled Billy's heart and his existence became a treatise in revenge, written in pixels and coin.

Now thats funny!
-
The story I heard RE: the Florida arcade scene was that the dialog about not wanting to be around certain people was actually directed at MR. AWESOME, not at Steve and that they actually talked that day (Steve and Billy) but the producers spliced it together as if he was talking about Steve.
-
That's pretty much how I remember it. Also, he didn't talk to Steve during his game because he was PLAYING A GAME. People would've been questioning why he was trying to disrupt Steve's game.

This has to be one of the funniest things I read on this forum in a long time. I remember this happening all the time at my local arcade growing up. :laugh2:

Dude, leaving your comments uncensored just means that those of who also have ours set accordingly will be able to relish your true words. It's a good thing.
-

Yeah, I think it was pretty much that. Billy said hi, asked how he was going, then moved on so as not to distract him. I read an interview where he explains what was edited (and the editing is clear when you rewatch the footage). He also avoids slandering the director (imo), but points out some things that put them in a pretty bad light. For example, they made it look like some big battle between Steve and Billy for the high score, but Steve took the title from Timothy Sczerby who had held it for years. Billy wasn't the reigning champion. The movie conveniently neglects to point this out, and tries to turn Billy into a villain. It makes for a more entertaining movie, and sure he's a character, but he's not that bad.
-
In the end, a documentary is still a MOVIE, not a news report, and thus is made more to entertain then to inform. There will always be exaggeration, distortion, and convenient editing to further the drama of the story the director is trying to tell. This is why I don't take anything Michael Moore does seriously.

Heh, in 1982, I was 12 years old, playing Popeye at the local hole-in-the-wall arcade, and some 18-year-old dude came up and put a quarter on the edge of the monitor glass. I thought he just wanted to see me continue since I was doing so well, so I took the quarter, dropped it in and...it almost turned into a real life version of Popeye vs Bluto, with no spinach can in sight. :-[
That's when I learned...you don't do dat!

That just strikes me as odd. I mean, why would he not be offering his quarter to you? I dunno, maybe this story is similar: we were at Chuck E's one Saturday night and the place was balls to the wall ---smurfing--- packed, so my dad negotiated sharing a booth with some other dude and his kid(s). Well, their pizza came first, and I was ---smurfing--- starving....so after a spell, I reached over to grab a piece....and he lightly slapped my hand! I didn't get it. Brains, I tell ya, go south at times.

Either I'm crazy or this guy is... ???
-
I got confused by the pronouns. Did your dad slap your hand, or the other guy?
If your dad, I can totally understand. I'd tell my theoretical kid hands off unless it's offered. But if it's the other guy...well, that's a little weird. If I were in the other guy's spot, I'd totally let the starving kid have a slice of pizza. :P
