Title: 1UP's cab versus miniMame -- you be the judge
Post by: 1UP on July 04, 2003, 08:37:25 pm
I was looking thru the arcade knowledge test and saw a pic on TrickyFishy's signature line that made me stop in my tracks.  It looked like a comp of my Pac-Mamea (http://www.1uparcade.com) cab about to be run over by a massive SUV!  I thought, OK, so someone doesn't like my cab, it wouldn't be a first.  Then I followed the link to http://minimame.com/ (http://minimame.com/).  It featured a very small cab with a very familiar design...

...Okay...so maybe it only looks similar from a 3/4 view.  So I compared a thumbnail of the plans to mine:

Almost an identical profile, so close in fact that the edges match very closely when they are overlaid, except that mini-Mame lacks the rotating panels, and is just large enough to hold a 12" monitor vertically.

I ain't mad, and I have no problem with people using my design, that's why I made my plans publicly available.  I'd just appreciate a shoutout from those who use them.  Now it's entirely possible that two people came up with a similar design, but I thought my cab's
profile was pretty unique, being a strange combination of Centipede and Defender, with the height and width of a T2 cabinet.  I've never seen this layout before, so it's just kind of funny...  :-\

OMG I can't believe I didn't even think about it. It's really not like me

Deepest apologies.  Yes my cabs shape was definitly inspired from yours and I totally should have given you the recognition.

I thought it was a great blend of other cabs as you mentioned.

I have updated my site to tell everyone where the design is based from and linked it to your site.

Heheh, now that's what I'm talkin about...  ;)

Well, since my suspicions have been confirmed, I'll plan on adding a link on my site this weekend.  I like to keep track of cabs that use my plans, even if they're not rotating CP designs.

Giving credit for these type of things is extrememly important, since most of the time the creator (be it plans, front-ends, or whatever) doesn't get a dime.

And they are both great cabs, BTW!  ;D

The people that share this hobby may be some of the friendliest around.  It makes me proud!   :)

I have seen cabinets that either used my plans, or - more frequently - used parts of my marquee without asking or giving credit back.  It is a bit of a kick in the nuts (since I don't even want money...all I would ask is a sentence in the page with a link in it), but ah well.
