I heard the news a while ago about the new Ghostbusters movie, anyone else glad they are finally continuing this franchise?
Long over due in my opinion.
-
I am ambivalent about it. Excited to see more but afraid they're going to destroy it like they did Transformers, Indiana Jones, and so many others.
-
I didn't see IJ, but Transformers was a lot better movie then I expected and is a movie I can watch over and over.
I'm not expecting a lot from it, but I think that type of movie and those actors is something that doesn't happen a lot anymore. I really wish they had made it sooner, Ramis is a bit different then when we last saw him.
From what I understand, it may be the start of a new franchise where they hand off the job to a younger crowd.
-
The current rumors are all of a "reboot like Star Trek but not a prequel". That sounds an awful lot like Hollywoodspeak for "we don't have a script or a budget".
-
I don't think it will be any good... don't mess with a classic. :badmood:

Transformers was a great popcorn movie. I can also watch it over and over. I keep trying to figure out WTF you fanboys expected from the film? Need you be reminded the original movie sucked ass, and the show was just a commercial?
Anyways, the last thing I saw Harold Ramis in was Orange County. He was awesome in it.

Trust me, I'm far from a Transformers fanboy. I had a couple as a kid and haven't seen the show in 20 years. I dislike the movie because it was boring and Shia Lewhatever was horrible. All he did was play that same babbling moron he always plays that always sucks. The only redeeming part of that movie was the woman and you could have swapped in any other superhot chick without any difference. There was so much badly animated crap going on half the time that you couldn't tell what was happening. If this movie didn't have the Transformers license, and was named "Robot Invaders", it would have been a ridiculous flop.
-
Transformers was merely OK. I enjoyed it once... I may watch it again in a dozen years or so. Meh... and I am not a Transformers fanboy by any stretch. I think my biggest issue is with that LaDouche guy playing the lead. For some reason, much like the little ---tallywhacker--- from Star Wars EP1, I want to reach through the screen and strangle the guy when I see him.
At least he wasn't as bad in it as he was in Indiana Jones. IJ wasn't "terrible" either... just bad enough to wonder why I'd just spent $17.50 to see it with the wife.
Of course, she (my wife) is like the masses... she consumes these movies and absolutely adores them. But she actually LIKED "Wild Wild West"... which, along with "Dragon Wars" is what I use as the benchmark for a bad movie.
Wild Wild West's saving grace is a decent theme song... but when the theme song is 100x better than the movie itself, well...you should reconsider making the movie I'd venture to guess.
EDIT: Like a Lemming I am sure I will go see this flick. I MAY be able to skip it in the theater as the wife and I will be busy at that time with a baby... so at least there is a bright spot to this all. Who knows... it may be OK. If it is, indeed, a "reset" of the story, I will be disappointed. I'd rather they do a "20 years later" flick... they're still bustin Ghosts...or even they broke up 20 years ago and they're coming together to face a new evil....

The entire end sequence is impossible to understand most the time, though on a 120Hz LCD with bluray, it is quite a bit better. (At least it was when I saw it running at BestBuy)

I must have the slomo version on DVD and SD TV. The animation seems fine and I cand see what is happening the whole movie. My only problem with the Transformers II so far is they don't have the Auzzie girl in it.

I wonder how many times a few years back Will Smith got cast specifically so he would do the theme song. It was a big part of both Men in Black and Hitch, too.

Hitch had a theme song?

EDIT: which oddly enough wasn't on the soundtrack, apparently... but I remember clearly the cross advertising at the time...

Meh. I ain't buying it. Will's a funny guy, and MIB was riding on his success with Fresh Prince.

Oh I'm not saying he didn't do a great job and wasn't a good casting decision... but there are probably 10 other guys who could have pulled off those roles too that couldn't do the theme song. I'm just wondering if it was a factor.
MiB didn't have to ride on the TV show. It was the year after Independence Day (now THAT is a movie I have watched 50 times and still enjoy it).

It would have been a bit weird if he had accepted the role of Neo in the Matrix, I think...

Interesting... maybe it would have been worth watching if that happened. I can't watch anything with Keanu Reeves past Bill + Ted.

I think he would have been great in that role. I can totally picture it.

He's good in Sam Raimi's "The Gift"

I totally agree - though it is starting to show its age. I was stoked for a whole year until that movie came out. All I saw was a teaser cardboard thing showing the alien ship coming over earth, and the "ID4" symbol. I thought for many, many of those months the movie was called ID4. I had no clue who starred in it - I just knew it was gonna be a badass alien movie that I had to wait a year for! Saw it on opening day and was MF'ing blown away!
P.S. Will Smith is past the big 4-0. duuuude.

Didn't they already destroy the franchise with Ghostbusters 2?

They came DAMN CLOSE!

Makes sense. I remember buying his first album in like 1987.
I didn't think Ghostbusters 2 was that bad. It wasn't anything like the first but it didn't ruin the franchise or anything. That one did need Eddie Murphy, though. Imagine how different Ghostbusters would have been that way.
-
Ghostbusters 2 just isn't as good as the first, but it's still a good movie as far as movies go. Better than some of the crap coming out today.
-
Ghost Busters 2 was B-O-R-I-N-G!!! Seriously, that movie bored the hell out of me as a little kid every time I watched it.

Why would you watch such a boring movie a bunch of times? :dunno
(watch, the answer will be "it was on the HBO rotation that month") ;D
-
Because I didn't have cable, and I was a latch key kid during the summer. Every day I would randomly pick a few movies from the collection to watch. Even then, I'm still not entirely sure I ever watched it all the way through in one sitting.
-
If I had to pick between Beverly Hills cop 1 and 2, and Ghostbusters 1 and 2 - I would take Mr. Murphy ever time.
-
I heard Dan Ackroyd interviewed yesterday and he was saying they're still working on the script, but he really liked the storyline they've come up with, have the writers of the original ghostbusters working on the script, and Bill Murrey has agreed to be in it. All of which makes me hopeful it will be a good movie.
-
Dude, that ---smurfy--- Evolution movie was even turned into a cartoon!
I only saw Evolution because I felt obligated as an X-Files fan to watch Duchovney's stuff. That movie was the end of that obligation. ;D
-
I sorta liked that movie. It wasn't great but you can't do better than "GIMME BACK MY FRIEND YOU BIG SPHINCTER!"
I fail to see any reasonable connection to Ghostbusters at all.
-

Then you obviously didn't see the cartoon.
-
I'd watch the new Footloose movie before a new Ghost Busters movie.
-
Yep, never saw the cartoon, and Aykroyd had a bit part in the movie.
Aykroyd was at a liquor store by my house recently signing vodka bottles. There was a two hour line. Odd.

And he must have missed all the advertising:
FROM THE DIRECTOR OF GHOSTBUSTERS STARRING DAN AYKROYD FROM GHOSTBUSTERS
Actually...it said "From the makers of Ghostbusters and Road Trip"...
You're not suggesting the movie is a shoot-off of ROAD TRIP now are ya?
-
Speaking of old 80's franchises....there is supposed to be a VOLTRON movie coming soon ala Transformers. Hopefully Micheal Bay won't get his clutches on it.

I was pretty depressed with how GB2 turned out.
When thinking back about GB1, what was really the draw? The proton packs
really were not it. It was mosltly about the character interactions. That cast
was just awesome.
Still, with the same cast on GB2... it wasnt very good. The interactions were
less humorous. The story was very weak. That painter dude was wretched awful.
The concept of emotional slime was slap-forehead stupid... and Statue of Liberty
being able to walk almost made me vomit from disgust.
GB1 has at least an attempt to make things a little bit on the side of
"It guess it could possibly happen...". Where as something like the Statue walking...
isnt even close.
I actually enjoyed "The REAL Ghostbusters" Cartoons much better than GB2. :)
I will be extremely surprised if they could top or even re-capture and compete with GB1.

Same here. I bought the DVDs recently. Still a great cartoon.

Settings, I guess. I see it just fine. Nevermind, I never clicked it.

Scary. That cube thing....talk about total lack of the concept of conservation of energy. And the implications of it not being there, at the very least regarding the disparity in design and function between it and the Transformers. Eeek.
Ghostbusters writing-wise was an Akyroid/Harold Ramis thing. Acting-wise, it was them and Murray. You can't do that again. And shouldn't.
