Title: coin doors and tokens and Happ
Post by: grafixmonkey on July 04, 2003, 02:12:15 am

I spoke to a Happ rep on the phone and she said that they will process orders where the customer requests a different kind of coin mech be swapped for the quarter mechs in their coin doors.  You just have to order over the phone, and they have to make a new temporary part number for it or something.

Yay, I get a token door!

Great!  Now you have to pay for tokens, as opposed to using regular currency!  Yay!

Well, the idea is that they aren't currency - so I can have a bucket of 'em sitting at a party and they won't be either added to pockets or used to order pizza when the drinks start to set in.  ;)    (or do my laundry...  or park my car)

Besides, they're $0.16 each, so having a bunch of arcade-dedicated tokens costs less than having a bunch of arcade-dedicated quarters.  And all the arcades I used to go to when I was a kid used tokens, so I want the full atmosphere.

I take it tho that I'm just about the only one here that's interested in tokens...    :P

I'm certainly not interested in tokens.  But then again, I pretty much use my cab for a piggy bank.  When friends come over, the coin door gets opened, and we rack up credits via the switch.

well I guess if I did use quarters, then friends might actually be willing to drop in party donations.  (and I'd have a place to keep my laundry funds.)

I don't even have validators in mine. Just pop open the coin door and flip the switch...

I'd just have topside coin buttons for that.  I'm putting some in, in addition to the coin slots, but it just wouldn't be an arcade machine without a coin door.  ;)

I got coin mech that accepts tokens, and I give you the 200 Tokens (used stuff) for $10.00. Buy 2 Coin Mechs and get 400 tokens etc...

You can get tokens off ebay for like 1 or 2 cents each.  Big bag of 500 tokens for $5.  Then you can set your mechs to accept anything close to the size of a quarter, and you're all set.  Sometimes you even find some cool tokens like Atari tokens, Aladdin's Castle, Sega or Namco tokens with game characters on them etc...

so wait, you can set quarter mechs so they'll accept tokens?  People told me before it couldn't be done.

It'll work, if you use tokens that are about quarter-size.  There are fine-tuning screws in most mechs that allow you to adjust the diameter and thickness of coins that can be accepted, within certain ranges.  I just adjusted mine to maximum thickness and maximium diameter, so anything that is approximately quarter-sized will go thru.  After that, I sat down and put every one of my tokens from the giant token bag thru the mechs, and threw out the dozen or so that didn't make it thru.  It still accepts quarters too, if I want to take donations...  ;)
