Title: Power supply
Post by: crashdmj on July 03, 2003, 11:47:53 pm
If I plan to wire coin door lights (4), P360 (4), a marquee and i dunno some other stuff; what is the best kind of power supply I can get (or most reasonable). Oh by the way its for a computer too.
Thanks
Derek

If it is to power your PC get a good quality ATX supply that will properly connect to your PC motherboard.   It should be either AMD or P4 certified depending on your choice.   Get one of at least 350W and you should be OK powering additional non computer items such as the 360 sticks.   If you use high output LEDs for your coin lights you will greatly reduce their power usage. DO NOT power your marquee from the PC PS.  Use a 120V flourescent light.

Regarding other stuff, don't try to power a automotive stereo amp from the 12V of your PC supply.  It takes too much power.  Get a separate supply if doing the automotive stereo route.

Remember most PC problems are due to cheap power supplies.  Do not get a cheapy.

How should I power the marquee, should I get a power strip and keep it inside the cab?

I recommend getting a power supply that has a "switched accessory outlet" on it.  You can plug your powerstrip into that, then the monitor and marquee into the powerstrip.  It will automatically turn on and off when the computer is turned on and off.

For example:

Great Power Supply!   Solves the switched AC problem for peripherals that has had everyone making relay hacks or buying switched outlets from Sears.
