On the mac I'm used to MacMame and Emulaunch. Both programs base the game list in Mame on the available roms.
With Mame OSX and all the PC frontends, they seem to start with the gigantic 8000+ standard gamelist of all MAME roms, which you have to clean up, by hand or with programs like Romlister.
What I look for is a frontend that makes a list of games based on the contents of the ROM folder. Is there any?
And more specific: if the folder contains pacman.zip, I want it to display Pac Man (midway), not Puckman and then under the clones "Pac Man". Is there a front end that works a bit like I suggest? I like the displayed names to be editable too.

Gameex will scan your rom directory and you can toggle between show only available roms and show all roms. You can also configure it to not show mahjong or adult games and filter or include/exclude any game you want.
Puckman is the original pacman. Pacman is a clone. You will need to either have show clones enabled or add it to the do not filter list.

Yeah, same with MaLa, Maximus, probably others. You just have to find the feature.

heck, romlister itself can do that for ya!
I added a rom scanning utility in build016.

Lots of them. For MAMEwah it would be easier to use Romlister or similar utility. Kymaera, Khameleon, others have this option in the config program.

AtomicFE does too.

MultiFE have a internal config which is pretty much what ROMLister do and remove deleted games automatic from the list.
ROMLister can also export gamelist files for comply of frontends.
