Always loved Rastan
-
it depends what you mean by popular...Now or then ?
My fave is I,Robot ;D
-
Pooyan!
\m/
;D
-
Butasan & Penguin Kun Wars are two that spring to mind :)
-
splatterhouse.... the game that every modern horror game developer ripped off
-
Man, I loved Splatterhouse as well. Interestingly, I was recently told that, in the Japanese version of the game, you were a masked killer trying to hunt down and kill the damsel in distress, not rescue her. Makes more sense, actually. What hottie in the world looks at a guy in tattered clothes and a hockey mask and says "Oh yeah. THAT's my man!"
Oh. Anyhow, I don't know what it says about my character, but I've taken a liking to a shooter called GUWANGE. It's not that impressive technically, but the setting is unreal. You play as a flying human in feudal Japan, and you're blowing up ox carts and things, and there's blood everywhere ... truly a unique atmosphere.

R-Type.
And the sequels.
Not exactly popular in NA (at least, not in my town) but apparently quite popular in Japan. So I guess that sort of counts :)

finaly i post heh
right now im diggin these games, of coarse it will likely change soon:
King of Boxers
Rampage World tour [ok its pretty popular but awesome]
88 Games [im sure it was popular in its day]
Arlington Horse Racing
Danny Sullivans Indy Heat
as for more well known right now i like:
Bucky-O-Hare
Baseball Stars 2
Battle Toads
Macross Plus
and of coarse the great fighters like KI, Street Fighter Series, and Ultimate MK3
-
Well, i've not yet seen this mentioned since I've started lurking / posting on these boards, but I love Soloman's Key. I think I love it because I first played it as a kid and the manager of the Pizza place taught me how to get free credits (by reaching in and hitting the coin switch of course) but it's stuck with me... and was one of the reasons I got into MAME in the first place. That and Escape from the Planet of the Robot Monsters (which plays like crap so it's not a fav. anymore.)

Not sure how popular they were, but I liked Yie Ar Kung-Fu, and Legend of Kage.

Juno First the best shoot 'em up game of all time, it's like Defender on steroids.

Ooooh Super Dodgeball is a fun one.
But I'm thinkinghere, what guages popularity? Different games are popular for different people and different places. And do we mean unpopular in the arcade or unpopular in MAME?
I love Super Puzzle Fighter 2 and so do alot of people here, but I don't think a whole lot ever played it on the arcade. Seems to be pretty populat in MAME, though.
-
as far as popularity i guess moreless weather its well known allround by most ppl, for example:
Street Fighter II would be popular
-
Rastan (brilliant music) and Trojan.
-

Gotta love it :) I have played it on GBA, Dreamcast, and the actual arcade version... I knew about it before I knew about MAME...
-
Trog! (I don't think it was that popular). I still get a kick out of getting the pineapples, turning into a T-Rex, and then eating the cavemen! ;D
-
For Old School Games:
Omega Race
Vanguard
Venture
Lock-n-Chase
Rip-Off (with two players)
-
IMHO the hardest game i stunble on MAME is "Chicken Shift"
This is make your brain split in half. I use the Flipper buttons for this game. Try it and you will get a headache around the 4th or 5th round.
-
My favorite "Hidden Gem" is Great Swordsman. Simple gameplay, but suprisingly deep.
Guwange is also very good.
Not sure of how it ranks popularity-wsie, but Food Fight is one of my all-time faves as well.
-
A real Hidden Gem is...
WindJammers
Very fun sports game especially good with 2 players. I encourage all to give it a whirl.
-
non-popular, hmmm, that rules out alot. I'd have to say Arabian. I played it as a kid in a local bar all the time.
-
Is Puzzle Loop popular?
That game is like crack...
-
I don't know if it was ever popular or not but I can't stop playing Pepper II .
This game is driving me mad!
It's kind of Pacman meets QIX and it's extremely addicting.
Slug54

kid...... bar!? That explains alot! ;D
The game I'd have to choose is Sky Kid. Cute, cartoony graphics, catchy music, and challenging. I always enjoy that one.
