I'm surprised that with Electronic Games being such a popular magazine during the golden age that there aren't billions of scans people have put online for it already.
I can't seem to find them for the life of me. Does anyone know of a place that have scans of this great mag?

I'm actually in the process of scanning what I have in my collection. You can check it out over at RetroMags (http://www.retromags.com), as well as a lot of other classic gaming mags. Here's one that I've scanned already:

I loved Electronic Games magazine. I had every issue, including the ones where the name was changed to Computer Games. Unfortunately, my Mom threw them away when I went off to college.
Thanks Waremonger for the scanned issue. Really brought back some memories.

not sure if they ever released it but "Game Room Magazine" was supposed to have digital coppies of their entire collection.

Between me and another member we have almost the entire collection. Our goal over at RetroMags is to scan the entire collection so be sure to check in and every now and then.

One great mag that, I believe, was very short-lived was called "Electronic Fun With Computers and Games". It was great in it's day. It was around the time of the Atari 2600. I'd love to see this mag again.

Wow, I thought I was the only who read that magazine. What a blast from the past. It would be great to see one again, there were a few issues I would still remember for sure. Gotta check that out.

Man, what I really miss is VG&CE (Video Games & Computer Entertainment). To me, that was THE best magazine. Long reviews, good stories...the next closest magazine was Next Generation, and that folded. Am I the only one who would rather read a good long review than just see a bunch of screenshots?

This brings back good memories. Got me thinking about Compute! magazine and the type-in BASIC programs they would have each month. I remember spending hours typing those in my Atari 800.

I've got about ten issues of "Electronic Fun with Computers and Games" that I'll be scanning as well. It's quite a time consuming process but I'll eventually get everything I have scanned - especially these old gaming magazines.

Next Generation was excellent as well. I loved the heavy stock that they printed it on.

Related topic -- here are the scans (not mine) of Joystik Magazine that I have:

Oh man, it seems like retromags wants to charge people for their scans of these publications. :-(

I should add that I would be more than happy to pay for PDFs of all the Electronic Games magazines scanned.

What gave you that impression? There is absolutely no charge to download the magazines. There is a quota system in place (which resets every month) to prevent people from leeching, if that's what you were referring to. Also, many of the more popular magazines have RapidShare links.
I don't run the site - I'm just a contributor, but I would imagine the hosting costs would get way out of hand without a quota system. People who contribute scans get an increased bandwidth allotment. And again, magazines with the RapidShare links have no quota (other than what RapidShare uses). The member who is generous enough to upload using his paid RapidShare account puts up as many magazines as often as he can within the limits imposed on him by his ISP / RapidShare.

Unfortunately I never got to see any of these while growing up :( Fortunately they will all be brand new to me now! Which mag do you guys think covered the most arcade style gaming? I think that's where I'd like to start.
-
Well i looked around the site, And at that issue. And looked at newer issues of newer mags....like tha old stuff. This site is cool. Just wish I could get dreamcast magazine, it's listed without rapidshare links.

...
I see where the disconnect was. The error message about downloading for paying members only was limited to direct downloading from retromags. I didn't realize rapidshare downloading wasn't restricted. downloading the massing scan now. Thanks!

Waremonger,
It just finished downloading the July 1983 issue. Great scan. Brings back lots of memories. ...especially the ads for all the joysticks being sold and the cheesy fake screenshots. I never really understood that as many of the hand drawn screenshots looked worse than the actual games. Maybe it was a printing composition issue?

Thanks for the compliment!

Yeah, looking back at these is definitely a nostalgia trip and the ads are, without a doubt, half the fun. I had always wondered when I was reading these as a kid why they used faked screenshots because, as you mentioned, the drawn "screenshots" usually look way worse. My guess is that maybe they had difficulty getting clear pictures of a TV screen without blur?

I'm not sure. If you look at page 55 and 68 of your July 1983 issue, you'll see photos some home port of Missile Command and Gridrunner respectively. They look great and pretty accurate to what you'd see on a tv or composite monitor.
...or maybe simply the magazine didn't have the time or resources to get photos on their own and relied on whatever the vendors gave them. But then it still doesn't answer why they're used in the first place.

I don't know how I just found this thread, but I did. LOL
I just went into storage (20 steps away) and pulled out my issues of Electronic Games. Looks like I've got all of 1983 (Jan-Dec) as well as Jan & Mar 1984. Unfortunately, I do not have a scanner...
I also found the following mags:
'Video Games': Dec 82, Feb 83, Mar 83, Apr 83, May 83
'Creative Computing Video & Arcade Games' Vol. 1 No. 2 Fall 1983
'Electronic Fun with Computers And Games' July 1983 Vol. 1 No. 9
Fun stuff!
Oh...I remember how I stumbled in here..I'm trying to figure out where to get 'snaps' to add photos to MAME. Any ideas?
