Title: MAME for X360
Post by: atxscarface on April 30, 2009, 05:33:18 pm
Ive heard of this rumor that Mame is soon going to be developed as a homebrew software install for the X360. Sure enough I looked on youtube and found a video. Any words on this?

I would guess it is a fake video.  But if not, running homebrew on a 360 isn't very practical, especially when a better computer for MAME can be had for around the same price or less.  Plus you would have to run the games off the DVD drive (slow!).   Not to mention, you could kiss XBOX Live goodbye forever on that system.

they could be using the  dev kit M$ sells which can stream the data from a PC or put it on the hard drive (cant recall the limits). People develop MAME for everything, its not always for practicality but for novelty.

I'm always impressed by the drive and skills of homebrew developers.  But in this case, I ask myself...WHY?

For $25 I can pickup a XBOX (orig) and in a few minutes have it soft modded and mame or coinops installed.  At that point, I'd put my $25 investment up against any x360 in a test of stability, speed, reliability, and ease of use.  Not to mention the controllers are much cheaper and easier to hack.

Just my 2 cents.

Yeah but you can only do so much with the 733mhz inside an Xbox.  There are games out of the Xbox's reach for mame and emulation and also the 360 is what's 'hot' these days, it's the console people have and actively want to hack.  Hell, even EB/GameStop has abandoned the Xbox.

Ya, I realize that is the most obvious argument.  Which has never been a concern for me, being a more retro gamer.  If I ever feel the need to play a game better than what the xbox can emulate, there's usually an actual console game that's similar (racing games, schmups, etc).

I just have this constant fear of the red rings on the x360.  And asking it to do more than what it was designed for probably escalates the odds of frying it!

with that attitude nothing would ever improve and there would never be any innovation. No one is saying that MAME on 360 in needed, or better, just that its being done. I had to double check who posted that , because expected that sort of retort from PBJ not you.

Didn't mean to cause a stir.  Just including my opinion.  And at the same time singing the praises of how much I love the old xbox's.  (I realize now I veered OT).

I even mentioned in my first post how impressed I always am by the devs out there.  If the 360 ends up having as many advancements on it as the original xbox did (and continues to), I admit it will be a superbad console.  But for now, personally, I'll continue to use the 360 to play a select few games (all I have time for) and continue to use my old xboxs as my work horses (XBMC, retro emus, etc).
