Title: tron light cycles
Post by: telengard on March 02, 2002, 07:27:49 pm
I have a control panel w/ a happs 8 way trigger and oscar spinner.  This setup is *great*
except during the light cycle phase of the game.  It seems that this part would have
needed 4 way movement only.  I  can't stop zig-zagging w/ the happs.  Any ideas?

You should get one of those Oscar Controls joystick-restrictor plates, I've heard lots of good things about them, and they'll make your 8-way joysticks into 4-way with the turn of two screws.  Another option would be to see if someone could compile you a version of mame, or you could compile a version of mame that had Tron's controls set to 8-way instead of 4-way, which would fix the problem.  I don't know how to do this myself, but I remember a while back a guy writting about how he just made his mame emulator into 8-way controls on all the games, and it fixed this problem completely.

i use a happ 8way trigger stick and have 'adapted' a way of playing the tron light cycle waves. instead of holding the joystick in the direction i want to go i do a quick jab then pull the stick back to center. it seems to work ok.

does anyone know for sure if tron uses a 4way or 8way? i remember someone with a real tron machine saying they could go diagonal in the spiders and mcp waves.

its an 8 way with a rubber grommet that restricts it to 4 way--that way if you want 8 way you just push a little harder, the rubber bends and bingo you are in 8 way mode.

I believe it was a restricted 8-way...you could go diaganal but it was somewhat restricted.
