My cabinet has 4 "gamepads", which are in actuality 4 U360 joysticks with the pushbutton harness. This makes my joysticks gamepads and the pushbuttons are gamepad buttons.
Does anyone have any general strategies for using VICE, or another C64 emu, with gamepads? The large number of keyboard inputs, which could be different for each game, seems to be a problem.
The number of games I'm interested in is small, but even for Paradroid, Archon and Impossible Mission I find that I need to keep the keyboard handy to start the games.
Any general tips, beyond joytokey?

You could property use a joy2key or xpadder to doing that.
This is directly why I in my own frontend choices not to have focus on C64 or such computers (even I LOVE C64). This is to due it have a keyboard and hence of course it not really cabinet friendly. You really need a keyboard to use it correctly.

I'm running both Vic 20, and Commodore 64 using
Hotrod SE.
I don't have all games but a good bit.. :)
I know This isn't a U360 and not seen as joystick but....
I don't have any problems starting or playing games...
or am I missing something?

It's a converted cab, so there's not a keyboard, or even a keyboard tray like in the US2 cabs.
The U360's and buttons are seen as gamepads rather than keyboard encoders.
This makes it difficult to enter 'Y' or "n" or hit the Run key.

Definately use joy2key. It will map the keys to the buttons so you can have say "button 3=y" Granted you can only map as many keys to as many buttons as you have. But it's worth it to have jumpman, ghostbusters, goonies, raid over moscow, toy bizarre, etc.

Do you script joy2key for different games, or try to find one map for the entire emulator?
Hmmm, that may be a front-end specific question.
