I'm going to change things up here: there are things missing from my Windows sound options. The board maker, Asus, recommends SoundMax, but installing that creates some conflict, because eventually I'll get static when exiting a game back into MaLa, or when fast-forwarding a track in WMP. The pictures below show what I have. What I'm used to having on every other computer, and what I'd like to have, are 'line in' in the render section, and 'wave out' for the capture section.
Note: I have tried upgrading the driver, and it can't find a better one. I've also tried various versions of SoundMax with the same results. If I disable the HDaudio in the Device Manager, then I have no sound. Maybe there's something I could put in its place?...I haven't been able to find anything in my searches though.

If you select Start->Run and enter 'sndvol32' enter. It should open up the volume control. Then selection Options->Properties. Select the Mixer device for input, then select the 'Recording' radio button. You may be able to add the 'Stereo Mix' from the list if it's there. You only need the sound driver for audio, which I think is included in SoundMax which may be a problem. But you should be able to access all of your inputs from the Windows sound mixer if the driver is installed. If the wave out or stereo mix is not listed I would make sure you have the latest version of the driver. I assume it's onboard sound so you would visit the motherboard manufacturer's website and download the audio drivers from their support section. If memory serves me right SoundMax is part of the driver install, so you may have to install it. That being said audio usually doesn't work at all unless you have the driver installed so if you do have audio, then it sounds (pardon the pun) like you do have a driver installed.
