Title: Fabricating a motherboard backplate?
Post by: Tiger-Heli on July 01, 2003, 11:24:27 am
Ok, I'm jumping the gun a little bit here, but that's not unusual for me.

Yesterday, I ordered a refurbished Shuttle AK38N mobo for my home/MAME computer (not a MAME cabinet).  You can see a picture of it here:  http://www.newegg.com/app/Showimage.asp?image=13-150-038-03.JPG/13-150-038-02.JPG/13-150-038-01.JPG/13-150-038-04.JPG&Type=Refurbish (http://www.newegg.com/app/Showimage.asp?image=13-150-038-03.JPG/13-150-038-02.JPG/13-150-038-01.JPG/13-150-038-04.JPG&Type=Refurbish)

From what I have read, these sometimes come with all accessories, and sometimes with just the mobo and no box.

I have standard AT and ATX backplates for my case, but apparently Shuttle decided to move the USB ports below the game/sound ports and shifted everything else up.

If there is no backplate with the new board, I am guessing that I could just cut one out of posterboard and use it.

Does anyone have any other suggestions?

The only function of the posterboard would be if you needed the hole plugged for airflow reasons.  Post a pic of what the back of the motherboard looks like, someone might have a backplate like it they could send you.  (think my last case came with a few different backplates)

Airflow and dust I thought were the only reasons for any kind of backplate.  The link above had a pic of the back of the mobo.  It's similar to the standard layout, but the USB connectors are not in the standard location.

I checked all my crap, none of my backplates match.  I bet the company would mail you one for a few bucks.

Funny thing is, if that were the back of my case, I wouldn't be using any of those plugs except the USB.  (and maybe the audio.)  And I could get a USB hub on the front ports.  :)

Generally, motherboards that have non-standard backplate configuration include the matching backplate with the board. Every board I've bought has been that way...  (YMMV)

I agree with iz there... the mother board should've come with a backplate... if it was missing you should try and contact newegg... maybe they'll send you a new one

First off, the board isn't here yet, so it may come with a backplate.

A new board will come with a backplate, but this was a refurb.  newegg says they won't provide any missing parts for refurbs, and not to expect anything.

I could probably get shuttle to send me one, but (not to sound cheap, well, ok, I don't care if I sound cheap).  The board was $23 including shipping.  If I have to spend $5 shipping on the backplate, it's not such a good deal.

So I'll probably go the posterboard route.  I was mainly just wondering if this was the best thing to use (price/convenience/functionality) wise, or if there was something else you would recommend?
