Possibly OT, if it is, sorry :) Anyway, thought some classic arcade fans might be interested,, Tim McVey is streaming an attempt to take back his Nibbler record (beaten earlier this year) For those that don't know the back story, Tim was the first to score a billion on an arcade game, back in Jan 1984, on Nibbler. The game took approx 44-45 hours. He's hoping to do it in about 36 hours or so. He started at 8:30am (Central) this morning, and as I type this, is at 212 million.
Here's the link for the stream:

An unfortunate coincidence...at least its spelled differently ;D (That loser was McVeigh)
-
Wow that's very cool.
Does he have a catheter hooked up or something? :scared

Nah, there's plenty of times for breaks on Nibbler. You earn a free life every 4 boards, and can't let it get above 128 (if you hit 129 or more, and lose a life, the game is over...I'm assuming it's due to an integer overflow or something, as 2^7 is 128). Of course, that's assuming you don't die frequently, which Tim doesn't ;D
-
damn you CKF...
I... can't... stop... watching...

I live in Oklahoma, so yeah, I know.

Funny how it does that huh?!? ... me too. :laugh2:

Just checked in again, about 10 minutes ago (5:50am EDT), he was up to 520 million. More than halfway there!
-
646 million right now. Just under 26 hours played.
-
Watching that is totally insane!
-
Currently at about 724 million and I can't stop watching. Why is this so addicting?!
-
Tim just hit 900 million at 10:25pm (eastern)...should hit 1 billion around 2:30am Sunday morning.
-
At 11:35PM CST he stopped. He began dying over and over. 945,939,420
All the lives just ran out and he put the initials SUX. He began possibly kicking stuff and then yelled "DAMN! AHHHH!"
-
Dammit, I was watching when he quit. WHat an amazing game though.
-
Amazing feat, even without setting the score. Like they kept telling him, he has NOTHING to be disappointed about. You could tell the end was coming. His playing was getting worse and he was breathing heavier. No one was talking anymore. You can't help but feel for the guy.
-
That was painful to watch towards the end. Still, he did great. Does anyone know where to find out when/if he's going to go for another attempt? I would love to watch that again.

Over at twingalaxies, Tim said the stick got to the point of being unresponsive and that he also had formed a huge blister.
He also responded to my post:
Tim, I stayed up late watching your game and saw the end coming. Your frustration was obvious and you sounded completely wiped out. You have NOTHING to apologize for. You did what only a handful ever attempt. It doesn't matter that you didn't take back the record. You kicked ass.
I applaud your hard work and dedication.
(By the way....did you start kicking stuff? When you let the game run the lives out, I heard stuff banging around. What were you doing?)
I let my anger get the best of me, on the way thru the kitchen, I threw my near empty can of Monster... Punched the interior door before opening it, then nearly kicked the exterior door off the frame as I went out the back door into our back yard to cool off... I wanted to rip the joystick out of the control panel... That's why I walked off with 15 lives left. I literally was unable to run a single pattern correctly at that point... I don't think I've ever been as frustrated at anything in my life, as I was with that game right then and there.
I came back in with 6 lives left and entered my initials... Well not the initials I usually would of entered... I usually entered TIM back in the day. That was one of the things that frustrated me so. I wanted the record SO BAD, I wanted to enter a very special set of initials, ones that I have never used before. TGJ - Tina, Gabrielle, and Jade. My wife and two step daughters.
I wasn't so frustrated for being unable to top Dwayne. I got the billion first, that was always my goal. I am truly happy that if I am unable to hold that record, that Dwayne has it, he's a great friend. I was frustrated so bad, because my wife never saw my original record. I've been wanting to set a record again, and enter those initials to show her how much she means to me, and how much I love Jade, Gabrielle and my wife. And between MAGFest and now this, I still haven't been able to do so. I wanted that to be shown in the documentary, and now likely will never happen.
That was more important to me than the score. That was more important to me than being a world champion. That was more important to me than anything. And I didn't get the job done, and now it will never be shown in the documentary. THAT was why I was so utterly frustrated. Now I've got to ask the documentary guys to do what I was unable to do myself, and request they add a message into the credits on my behalf. I would of rather of done it myself, in my own way...
I felt really bad for you when you did enter the initials SUX.
Yup the ending surely sucked... I still wanted to get a sledgehammer at that point and proceed to do some real damage to the control panel...

I hear Howard Cosell.
I don't know this game. I'll have to check it out.
-
I've only played it on QBASIC, I'd never heard of it as an arcade game. :D
