I configured Mala to use certain sounds when scrolling up and down a list and they don't work. The sounds for launching and quiting a game work as well as switching lists and Mala exit.
The only sound I can't get to trigger is the up/down sound. I tried swapping the sounds for up/down and next/pre list and the up/down still didn't work, so it's not a problem with the sound file.
Another issue I have is that if I set things like the menu sounds to a reasonable level, the sound in games is very low. If I turn up my speakers for the games, my ears bleed when I go back to Mala. It looks like Mame is defaulted to max volume and even then some games are very quiet with my speakers turned all the way up.
I know there is a volume setting for the background music, but that doesn't seem to change the effects. I have the background music set to about 20% and, with my speakers cranked, the BG music still shakes the cab but the in game sound is really quiet. I want the opposite. Loud games and nice subtle background music... (Can NIN be subtle BG music? ;D )
Do I have to map the volume up/down in Mala? I was under the impression that was just for ingame. On the subject of mapping, I mapped next song to button 9 and previous song to button 12 and previous song doesn't work. I flipped it and then next didn't work, so you'd think it'd be a problem with the button, but if it was, why does the button work in Mame to bring up the menu and work in the Mala test screen?

* You probably have not checked (gui -options - display delay - gui sounds)
* You can lower 'mame' volume. hit the tab key for the menu of options

So you need to have the delay set for the sound to play? I didn't want there to be a delay so I turned it off.

That check box is for delay 'exceptions'. IE No delay. You want this ON!

Heh, no, I turned the whole delay thing off figuring nothing would be delayed.
I turned the delay on and then just disabled it for everything and now it works. ;D
