Title: Can you mount a trackball turned 90 degrees?
Post by: Triangel7D on April 06, 2009, 09:44:26 am
Hi everyone. Longtime lurker, first time poster.

I'm building my first cabinet (finally) which is a conversion of an old 19" Taito cabinet and it came with a Happ 3" trackball. This sucker is HUGE underneath the CP, and I'd like to build a new CP with a 7-button per player setup and spinner.  The CP (at the moment) is only 23" across, and I need all the room I can get.

Would it be possible to mount the trackball at a a 90 degree angle to allow for more room? Wouldn't I just switch the axises to the Mini-Pac?

yeah..you would just need to change the wires to make sure the x and y axis are working properly after the rotation

You can change the orientation of a trackball, but you have to keep in mind that they tend to work a little better in some direction than others, due to the physics involved with the way the rollers are placed.

For instance, games which require a hard forward spin may not work as well when the TB is rotated.

Yup, depending if it's being rotated left (aka clockwise) or right.  If there's a roller still at the top after it's rotated, it'll be fine (with the referred to golf/bowling/horseshoe games).  IOW, rotating left is fine OTTOMH (I'm sure of happs, and pretty sure about all others).
