Title: Considering LED pushbuttons...
Post by: Organic Jerk on April 02, 2009, 12:07:19 pm
.. but the majority of them are just plain ugly...

Am I the only person who want buttons to look good lit or not lit?

It seems like the only ones that touch on this that I can find are the kinds here:

But they're convex... does anyone know of any concave type buttons with that style?

Electric Ice and Novagem at groovygamegear are both concave. Novagems look closer to what you want.

You can also use any of the 'Happ' translucents and light them yourself.

I did that, and I think they look great. This pic makes them looked washed out, because it's really hard to get a good exposure on them. I should try again, but I've been a little lazy.

Hrm.  I'm not sure how the Novagems look unlit.. does anyone have any pics?

I know for sure I hate the happ ones, because they're the ugly ones I was referring to...  I know it seems like a weird bias for wanting LED buttons, but i can't stand the translucent button look.

I like the ones at dreamarcades because if unlit, the buttons still have solid color, which looks nice.

The only time they're unlit is when the machine is off, though. My arcade is pretty dark, so they just look like a different color of red and blue when it's off. I'll post some pics later tonight.

i have novagems in my cabinet, but i dont have any pics of them unlit...i'll take some tonight.  i only used them for admin buttons...just exit and pause..the rest of my buttons are regular happ buttons.  i have a blue one and a yellow one.  they both look fine when unlit, and lit as well.  the blue is a very deep blue when not lit.  the yellow turns more of an orange when lit up, because of the amber LEDs that come installed in them.  i installed a white LED in my yellow novagem and i am much happier with the color of it.

here is a pic of them lit up:

I think I agree with what you are saying about the look of the translucent buttons. I don't think they look good either, especially when the majority of the time you will see them either unlit or in the day, when they look their worst.

I have the Ultimarc Ultralux buttons, and they do look gorgeous - both lit and unlit. I got the chrome bezels because it matches the chrome t-molding I am going to do, and they look fantastic.

But they are not concave, and you said you want concave. So just adding another opinion on the matter.
