mame uses defaults unless you ask it to generate a mame.ini

I think this is how:

mame.exe -cc

From a command line in Windows (Start menu -> command prompt so a new window opens that resembles DOS) type: mame.exe -cc     then hit the enter button.  That command will generate the file and place it in your MAME directory.

What is mame exe- cc?
cc = createconfig

From a command line in Windows (Start menu -> command prompt so a new window opens that resembles DOS) type: mame.exe -cc then hit the enter button.
Make sure you change to your mame directory before typing in mame.exe -cc.  To do that do:
1)  Start...Run and type in cmd then hit the enter button (command if using Win98).
2)  cd \ then hit the enter button -> This will take you to the root of your c drive
3)  cd <path to mame> then hit the enter button -> for me it is cd arcade\emulators\mame
4)  mame.exe -cc (if that does not work type mame.exe -createconfig)

My dad is a gynecologist and he looks at vaginas all day long.

I really do appreciate the help but I'm not even that sure of what I'm doing?

I went to start and and pulled of the dos like window but from here I get a bit lost.

1) worked !

2) C:\ Doc and Set\ Admin>  cd \

3)  I get lost here???

4) C:\>  from here I typed mame.exe -createconfig

After this step I get errors

Thanks
Any ideas

The fact that you had the c:> is good.  Now you need to know the path to your mame.exe.  When you are in explorer where do to go to get to mame.exe?  My path is c:\arcade\emulators\mame, find out where yours is.  Once you have that then that is the path that you will type in for step 3.
Again my path is c:\arcade\emulators\mame so I will type in
cd arcade\emulators\mame.
Hope that helps.

ok sorry for all the hand holding but my mame exe. is sitting in a folder on my desktop called "mame latest"

so would the path be this?

C:\>\mame latest\mame

I guess my last thought is....why in the freaking world is it so deep and technical (for some) to get a trackball to work with the LATEST VERSION OF MAME?  I mean, does anyone looking to use trackball with the latest version of mame have to go through this?   :D

Thanks          ?

Is your mame.exe file in "mame latest" or in a folder within "mame latest"?

If it's the former, from c:\ you type cd:\mame latest then type mame.exe -cc.
If it's the latter, from c:\ you type cd:\mame latest then type cd:\mame then type mame.exe -cc

Post back if you have questions still, try it and it works, or if it doesnt work.  Basically, just tell us what the situation is.   ;)

My mame exe. is the the folder titled "mame latest" on my desktop

Ok here is exactly what I typed directly after C:\>

cd:\mame latest mame.exe-cc

and also tried

cd:\mame latest mame.exe -cc  (with a space between exe and -cc)

All I get is a syntax error??

Wow you are being seriously patient with me thanks

Ok so I really hope that I haven't wasted a whole lot of your time buuuuuuut....

I just decided to give the new version of mame a go WithOut the use of a trackball.  Only a few games anyway right?

What totally shocks me is that a bunch of games that worked perfectly before in my old version of mame do not work at all.

So now I'm wondering if this even worth it at all?  Any of you guys experiencing the same problem?

My mame exe. is the the folder titled "mame latest" on my desktop
Because it is on the desktop your path would be a little longer
C:\Documents and Settings\<userid here>\Desktop\mame latest
but I have a better idea for you.
Try this:
1.  Open the folder that mame.exe is in
2.  Right click an empty spot in the folder and choose new...shortcut
3.  Under "Type the location for this item" type cmd.exe and hit next
4.  Should say cmd.exe under "Type a name for this shortcut:", hit finish.  (doesn't really matter what you call it)
5.  Right click on the shortcut you just created and select properties
6.  If there is anything in the Start in field delete it and hit OK
7.  Double click the shortcut you just created.  You should see something like:
     C:\Documents and Settings\<userid here>\Desktop\mame latest>
8.  Type mame.exe -cc and hit enter (if that does not work type mame.exe -createconfig)
9.  Cross your fingers and hope that it works

There are a lot of other config changes you can make in this file so I think it is worth creating, even if you just open it and look at it.

Wow you are being seriously patient with me thanks
That is what we are here for.

***EDIT****
Just realized that you meant is it worth it to upgrade since some games don't work.  That my friend is a whole other can of worms.  With upgrades some games get fixed and some get broken.  I posted the question a while back "If it ain't broke" or "onward upward"  (http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php?topic=88168.msg925758) that you could read.  Look at maws (http://maws.mameworld.info/maws/) as well, you can search your games to see if there is a newer version.
For example if I search Ajex and look under the data section I see
version added .036b02
last change(s) .128u4 .071
I am running mame .128 so if I update to .128u4 or higher I will need a newer ROM.
Hope that helps

This is what I would do:

Download "Open Command Window Here" from Microsoft here (http://download.microsoft.com/download/whistler/Install/2/WXP/EN-US/CmdHerePowertoySetup.exe) and install it.
Right-click your folder on the desktop and choose "Open Command Window Here" in the menu that pops up.
This will open a command prompt with the correct folder already selected.
In this window type:  mame -cc
Press the Enter-key.

If you're on Vista you don't need to install the utility above.  Just press and hold the shift-key when you right-click the folder.
