Title: wood preperation before overlay goes on?
Post by: mytymaus007 on March 27, 2009, 11:20:14 pm
I was wondering if i should paint the control panel with a primer paint before i put on a 10ml thick adhesive overlay. Would it stick better with the paint not sure the best paint to use or should i stick it to the bare wood regular 3/4 plywood Im not using lexan just the 10ml overlay

most people here will tell you to prime it first at a minimum. It should work either way, with that being said It really boils down to your own prefrence. It should just stick to the barewood without any problems, just make sure it's uniform and smooth so you don't have any bubbles or air pockets. As for primer I think I used krylon spray type.

Use a quick-dry primer that you can sand smooth. MDF or plywood that is unsealed can give off gasses that will form bubbles.

I varnished my 1st CP before applying the overlay and I got some nasty bubbles overtime. I have heard good results using primer though as the others suggested.
