Title: Light Tape
Post by: orion on March 27, 2009, 02:50:30 pm
Has anyone ever seen any of this stuff. http://www.lighttape.com/  It looks pretty cool, I saw this and thought that someone could use it as T molding or something. I wonder how expensive it is.

It looks identical to EL Wire. just flat.

I ordered some of that out of china and have been playing with it for several weeks now for the marquee of a cab I'm working on.

No pictures yet, but I'll post something when it's farther along.

But it's amazingly easy to work with, and it looks pretty slick. Plus there a tons of colors available.

Dude, you have so got to post some pics of that. Did you see under the examples though of some of the stuff you can do with it because it is flat? What would be really slick I think would be to integrate some of this stuff into a CPO graphic... I mean if folks think lighted buttons and joysticks are cool, imagine what lighted text on a CPO would look like.

Exactly. It wouldn't fit with the current cab I'm building, but I saw a post by someone here recently speculating on doing a CP where the labels and possibly the art itself would change to adapt to the game being played (for instance, by using e-ink paper on the CP).

Now THAT would be frackin' cool! (pardon my BSG ;) )

I bet for use in a cab that the 9V kits would work pretty well.  You wouldn't want it to be super bright.  Those kits are reasonably priced @ $35 or so.....

What?  No one has plans for a new Tron guy costume?

I think that's called EL Tape. I have some of that, but it's more like "autofluorescent" than that it's a light source as shown in the Light Tape galleries.

A long exposure goes a long way to making anything vaguely light like appear like an awesome illumination source...

I know someone that got some of that tape for a PC mod - after a few months it was getting dark sports over it near the edges of it gradually getting larger and larger.

I got a quote for this stuff to put it where the tmolding would go and it would be $527.20 USD.
I said I would pass.

Check out the offerings at http://glowhut.com

I have not ordered any of their product however so I can't vouch for them, but the prices seem to be good.

The real question I know it may sound stupid, but can you cut the el panel to a shape, or does it have to stay in its current shape?

The el pannel starts at sizes ove 6". Thats from an email from them. But in the pictures they have designs with it so it might. But it also has some sort of laminate on it to. So the cut shapes might be custom orders.
