Title: Classic arcade games on the Wii?
Post by: patrickl on March 26, 2009, 08:45:06 pm
I just read an article on ars technica about Nintendo GDC keynote: Wii Storage, new Zelda, world domination (http://arstechnica.com/gaming/news/2009/03/nintendos-gdc-keynote-wii-storage-new-zelda-domination.ars)

Apparently there is a new store coming where you can purchase and download classic arcade games:

There will also be a new store available on the Wii that focuses on classic arcade games. The service is launching in the US with four games, with more coming "soon." These are things you don't need me to report on, however, as Iwata announced that both updates are already available for download. Your Wii should be glowing blue as we speak.
I wonder if this is about the same crappy NES ports or would they have created an emulator for actual ROMS?

If you look at the pictures in the article, you will see that some of the games listed didn't come out on the NES.  I'd assume an arcade emulator.  Also, the article says the update should be out.  Anyone know what the first 4 games are?

I think the European and US store each start with 4 different games.

Nintentdo's UK website als has an article about Welcome to virtual console arcade (http://www.nintendo.co.uk/NOE/en_GB/news/2008/welcome_to_virtual_console_arcade_11883.html).

Our Virtual Console Arcade line-up begins with four favourites from NAMCO BANDAI and TECMO (Gaplus, Mappy, The Tower of Druaga and STARFORCE) and other big-name publishers will also be bringing their wares to the Wii Shop Channel in the future, so watch this space!

Guess that' the european start.

Shacknes claims in their article (Wii Virtual Console Gets Arcade Games (http://www.shacknews.com/onearticle.x/57842)) that the following 8 games will be introduced:

Space Harrier, Mappy, The Tower of Druaga, Gaplus, Star Force, Solvalou, Emeraldia, and The Return of Ishtar.

Apparently it opened on the 25th of March. Guess I better check it out.
