This is an amazing tutorial I found on make about building a crazy 3d wiremap. I now am dreaming about where I would use it, but man if this visualized audio imagine the fun you could have with it.

The distance to frequency thing is pretty cool, but essentially the movement is done through the angle of projection. Back in '92, I was playing with the same thing at a party, where there was a laser parallel to the deck, and I spun and toss a bit of string in its path, resulting in what appeared to be a red dot madly flying around. In this case here, the 'objects' displayed by the beam are moving.
