So after getting the MKII monitor sorted out 100% I was ready to tackle anything! 8) Well, now my most recent acquisition (an hour old) has some issues of it's own.
I just picked up a dedicated MK1 with the factory W-G 25K7197. (Zenith tube :P) When I tested it out at the previous owner's house it ran. It needed some tinkering all around, but ran fine. So, I bring it home, plug it in and the monitor runs for 4 seconds and shuts down... ???
So, I try again and this time nothing at all... ???
So... I remove the monitor from the cab and discharge it. The fuse is fine and all connections are good. :-\ I figured that ok, it just traveled 20 min in a pickup truck, perhaps something is loose. So I put everything back together and reinstall. I go to fire it up and it starts... and dies after 5 seconds... I try again a few minutes later and it dies after 2 seconds...
Could a soldier joint have gone bad on the ride home? Did I cook the flyback somehow?

Definitely start by pulling the chassis and checking ALL solder joint, especially around large pins and larger resistor and the flyback.
Can you tell if it's been re-capped any time recently?

Does not look re-capped. I will take the monitor out again and look at the soldier joints! The discharging only takes care of the tube right, I should still use caution when dealing with the board/caps right? HELLOOOO NOOOOOB! HAHA!

There's a couple caps, mainly the bigger ones that may hold a good enough charge to spark up a bit. But be more concerned with discharging properly and remember..... just because you discharge and it pops real good, doesn't mean the TUBE itself won't build back up a little, so stay clear of it and I usually discharge the hole again before I reach in there and put the anode back on.

It's funny, I have done a CRT discharge about 4 or 5 times and I have never heard a pop. It's always very anticlimactic. Hmmm, that's good I guess! ;)
By the way, would a W-G U5000 25" 25K5108 be a good replacement? I know it can be standard or medium res, I just don't get how.

I personally would NOT recommend the U5000.
They are very well known to be problematic and hard to repair when they go haywire.
They are switchable between STD and MED resolution via a large jumper connector that you have to physically move from one spot to another on the main chassis. (no automatic stuff)

Ehhh.. Figures. I only ask because there is one for sale locally for $170.00. Oh well.
I'm grabbing a bite to eat and heading down to get to work on the MK. I will post my findings.

Damn it. I can't figure it out... I pulled my NBA JAM monitor and put it in the new machine for now... Looks like I'll just grab a Makvision. ;D
