I have finally settled on Mame 0.105 - it runs well, apart from the fact that when I play certain games they don't fit to the screen... I tried a few settings in the ini file which were suggested by a member here but they didn't do the trick - can anyone help me with this... its really frustrating me...

are you using an arcadevga card or soft15 or something?
-
It might have been an idea for me to say what monitor/setup! ::)
No, its just a standard 22" PC CRT 60Mhz Monitor... nothing special!

are you telling mame to run at a specific resolution? or is it set to auto? if it is set to auto, then the resolution changes per game, at which point, you should need to run the monitors auto adjust for that resolution to get to line up properly. your other option is to tell mame to run at a specific resolution, and it will convert it..that way your monitor doesnt have to adjust all the time.
there is a resolution setting in mame.ini by default it is set to auto. i have a 19" LCD with a native resolution of 1280x1024. so in my mame.ini resolution is set to 1280x1024x32 (32 is the color depth) and that way there is no adjustment needed.

Thanks again for yet more good advice severdhed!
I'll look into it now...

Wow, well, that was easy - really wish I'd known that before... got it first time with 640x480x32... now it fills the screen beautifully... yay! Thanks chap.

no problem...glad it worked out for you.

Hey, slap. If you want real hardware scanlines, you'll want to run it at 640x480 with stretch on. Make sure you adjust your monitor OSD so it does fill the screen during games. By the way, with only stretch on, Mame automatically matches your desktop. See, you just have to learn how mame works, how resolutions are selected, and how your monitor functions.

Cheers Ummon, I'll look into it.
