Title: What's the best way to safely remove stubborn paper backing on NOS Marquees ?
Post by: mrclean on March 19, 2009, 04:12:15 pm
I have a few NOS marquees that I'm going to utilize in the near future and noticed that some have almost what appears to be fused paper backing to the marquees. They don't seem to peel off. I wanted to know what's the best method for removing the paper backing while still being cautious / protective of the art underneath.

I figured that was the best method, the paper should eventually get mushy. I didn't try this method yet, but hopefully soon enough when I'm ready to use the NOS marquee(s) I will try it out.

I had a NOS Wizard of Wor marquee, I used a hair dryer and was able to peel off large chunks of paper at a time, it came off real clean. I mostly had the hair dryer on low but did crank it up to high a few times, being careful to not get hair dryer too close to marquee and didn't leave it on 1 spot too long.

I would think steam from an iron would loosen the paper without damaging the art. I'd be leery of trying it on a valuable NOS marquee too though?

Why do I recommend this though? Because stamp collectors use it to remove used stamps from envelopes.

I'd be leary of using too much heat of any kind for sure....... just be gentle.

I just got a NOS plexi bezel and the damn paper won't come off.  I'm going to try the warm soapy water method, but I'm nervous that some of it will get on the silk-screened art on the other side.

Getting it on the art side won't hurt it....as long as you aren't scrubbing on that side......it won't "dissolve" or anything like that.

if the heat dont do it freezing it may work but I never tried it before on a marquee but freezing was a good method for getting the original xbox jewels and goo off the top of the case without damaging or scratching it.
