Title: What O.S do you use ?
Post by: Happy_Dude on June 29, 2003, 04:41:08 am
I'm thinking of running free dos ( http://www.freedos.org/ )
Or Linux, mainly because the enire boot sequence can be hidden behind
a Mame picture  (and I can recompile the kernel for K6) ;)
I'll be running a 300Mhz  K6 so I want to keep overhead to a minimum.

Just want to get an idea of what everyone is using in their cabs  ;D

I am running DOS also. I want to get the  best speed out of the least amount of hardware.

I'm running a mini ITX 533Mhz VIA fanless motherboard with a 2GB drive w/128 MB RAM.

I was checking out FreeDos a couple of years ago and there was a limitation on the size of the hard drive it could access. I think it was 500M, but that may have changed since then. Check the documentation.

I only have a spare 240Mb hdd to use so that won't be a problem.
And I do think free dos can access anything on the market now from what I'v heard.
But it would be best to read the doc's :)

I'v been meaning to set up a dosbox to play all my old dos games anyway
(And you can download most of them for free now ;D )
It will take me awhile to finance my Mame cab so I'll set it up as a normal
dos box now and clean it up to only use mame when I have a cab to put it in ;)

I use XP Pro.  I've been using XP Pro since beta stages and it's been very stable.  I can run it on several 'low-end' machines easily as well (233Mhz with 128 MB RAM).  For my dollar, it's worth it.

My cab is a AMD XP 1800+ with 512 MB RAM, 40GB HD.

Really  ??? XP ?
I tried to run XP on a 233 and it had a dummy spit and said it required at least a 300...

I wouldn't soil my cab with a M$ product anyway  :P

well, looks like i'm one of the few running it in Linux, through MythTV http://www.mythtv.org (http://www.mythtv.org)

I run on Mandrake 9.1, though most of the games get tested out first on XP.

I use Win98 DOS mode on my cabinet, which is an Athlon 1700+.  The only extra overhead is the space Windows takes up on the hard drive.  It is nice to have the option to load Windows on occasion to download more roms or whatnot.

I also used it on two previous PC's, one was a P-133 and the other a K6-450mhz.  I think I had 64M of ram on both.  Among the games that would run on these PC's (mostly classics), they all ran better in this config than running Windows and Windows Mame.  I also went back to Mame version 0.36 or so (from 0.65), which gave a noticable speed boost on many games.

my cab will run a really lighted linux, take a look here
http://freshmeat.net/projects/knoppixmame/ (http://freshmeat.net/projects/knoppixmame/) for some inspiration, this will allow to keep overhead to a minimum.

300 is recommended, 233 required.  I just hit the limit for file and print serving.

My parents use xp pro...   very very slowly...   on their  P-Pro 266.  It might just require MMX.

I'm about to build them a new pc from scratch just so I don't have to try and fix the darn thing any more.

Right now I'm using MS-DOS 7.0 with ArcadeOS.  I'm thinking about migrating to Linux.  I had thought (briefly) about porting ArcadeOS to Linux, but I just don't have the time.

I'd love to get Gamelauncher working in Linux.  The site sez that it works.  Haven't tried compiling it yet.

Dont use XP unless you have a 1gig+... It wasn't designed for it...

on a 300mhz, I would guess that 80% of your resources are for the OS alone.

With slow machines, consider DOS or Linux... Then 98... Then XP....

Think about what machines where normal when the OS was released!

I hate to disagree, but I have 4 computers at home all PIIIs w/450-600 Mhz and 384 MB RAM.  I am running WinXP, Win98, Win2k, and Redhat 9.  As far as I can tell the WinXP box outperforms the Win98 box.  Although I have to admit any performance tests I have done have been specifically for my work, not for MAME, YMMV.
