I had a local guy try to repair my mtc9110. It had a solid line across the screen when I gave it to him. He replaced the flyback and vertical ic. When he tried to power it up something was smoking. He said the tube might have a short in it or a resistance problem. He wasn't real interested in going much further and found another used 25" monitor. Is there a way to test this before I try to get this repaired by someone else?

suggest good lighting and perhaps magnification to locate burnt component(s)
what and circuit location will dictate how to proceed.
loss of vert generally does not require a flyback replacement. why he did :dunno

I'm not sure either. Is there an easy way to test the crt for a short before I send this off to get repiared by someone else?

what is the symptom that you believe indicates a shorted tube ?
a second anode short will put the anode voltage on the pins - and can produce quite the light show - BZZZT !!
a hk short will produce a bright single color w/retrace
all three guns w/hk short will give white w/retrace .
purple/blue glow, arcing in the tube ....

I haven't plugged it in since I got it back from the guy. That was his diagnosis. Should I try and plug it in and see if I get any of these symptoms? I don't know if this guy didn't have the skill or didn't want to invest the time to troubleshoot the actual problem. I might just discharge the crt a couple times and send the chassis to arcadecup.com for repair.

if he wasn't an experienced servicer , it may have been a little of both. ;)
although i know of some tv techs that won't touch a game monitor.
which , i find amusing as there really isn't much difference from a tv ... :laugh2:
do try to find the alledged burnt part before u fire it up .
and/or just be ready to kill it - quick .........................................
loss of vert may have just been the output ic , diode(s) perhaps a fused resistor, caps
a discrete output has more components ( transistors ) but , essentially the same
type of failures.
