Title: LED-Wiz turning on monitor?
Post by: Kayden on March 14, 2009, 11:50:11 am
I was reading the RetroBlast review of the LED-Wiz and it said that it could be used to turn on an arcade monitor after the PC had booted, any idea how this would work?

I would do it with a solidstate relay on one of the outputs, which was in line with the power to the monitor.

There may be a way you could use the LEDwiz to send IR commands if it would switch fast enough, but I have not got one to try that with.

Arcade monitors have IR inputs?

Being as it's 115v and I can't just fiddle until I get it right, can you provide some kind of guide, diagram or instruction?

Send RandyT a PM about it.  Make sure you update your thread so we can all see the answer though.

This kind of project isn't one that should be fiddled with at all if you don't know what you are doing.  Too many ways for things to go bad (fire, death, loss of computer equipment, etc.)

But richms has the right idea.  You would need to find a relay that uses a small enough current to activate it (no more than a couple hundred ma), so solid state is best.  And the capacity needs to be rated high enough to carry the power required by your monitor.  Then, of course, you need appropriately sized wire and a circuit board to tie it all together.  You might be able to do it without a PCB, but that's not really safe nor recommended.

But seriously, if you can't picture how this one goes together in your head, you should find another method.

I can picture it and understand the theory, I'd just like a firm recommendation on components before I start soldering.

I can't recommend anything specific for this project.  Too much liability, I'm afraid, to do so without testing, etc, etc...

Do some digging and come up with a parts list and schematic drawing.  I'm sure there will be plenty who will offer their opinions once you have done this.  It will also make it easier for others who are considering something similar to understand how it works.

Ok, hopefully I'll have time to read while I visit the quasi-inlaws.  :banghead:

PS- I'm eagerly awaiting my buttons and LEDWiz.     I need them now!   :hissy:
