Title: why no more plug&play games?
Post by: briktop11b on March 11, 2009, 08:28:20 pm
A few years ago they were releasing those plug and play games left and right. They had a mortal kombat, street fighter and many older arcade games like frogger, galaga, all the pacman games. I know they werent the arcade ports but at the rate they were going they should be able to handle arcade ports in the near future. I was excited to see what they would try next. It seemed as if they just kept getting better. Then they just stopped. Whats up? Has anybody heard about any future releases? Im dissapointed i havent been able to find any.

I've seen a bunch at Wallyworld. I even noticed that the PacMan game sounded like it had switches under the joystick. It produced that classic sound. Also could twist the joystick for use as a steering wheel for pole position, another of its 12 games. There were others, like Star Wars, but some of the games seem lame. My 2-year-old plays a Dora the Explorer one and even she thinks it's lame after about an hour. But for PacMan and vintage games, it seems like a sweet option for $10 to $20 US.

They were a good idea but the majority of us enthusiasts saw through the price tag as we often do with console recompilations and they probably didn't sell as well as you think. Most people these days have a PC  that is not tucked away in a spare room and even the most casual gamer is aware of emulation and the fact it can be obtained for free so again are the general masses buying them in droves? Hard to tell.

That's one problem. LOL
there was no sound to the classics.
Leaf switches VS cherry switches
The classics had leafs

Im sure the novelty wore off after a while and sales went down. I made a few arcades with hacked jakks games and was really hoping they would continue to make more modern games on the plug and play hardware. Mainly for a cheap way to build a small, legal, easy dedicated arcade. I just liked the simplicity of it and if they would continue to develope the hardware there is no limit to what they could do with those things. But like was already mentioned a few guys wanting them for arcade projects isnt enough for a mass marketing so i guess they are pretty much canned. :'(

I have a theory.

We have one or two of these things for the eight year old. They were fine as a sort of introduction to gaming, but she quickly got bored with them. Especially since our house sports full blown emulation, PS2, Wii, Gameboy Advance and her idiot father just bought her a Gameboy DS and a cellphone. Makes it really tough for these Plug&Play games to compete with full blown systems with far better graphics and interaction.

The P&P stuff reminds me a lot of those old Game & Watch games or those old Tiger Electronics games that hit the market and everyone had to have one or two... and that's about it. Everyone bought one or two and the market wasn't sustainable afterward. I've got a couple of the old G&W games and one working TE game left and despite their low cost and easy appeal, they were easily eclipsed when I finally saved enough to buy full blown consoles and portables.

The problem was they kept putting out the same titles over and over again in different shells, if they had added more classics to the line up I'd still buy them.

Even more, she isn't stuck to a spot in front of the TV.
