Title: MsPac - anomalies and familiarities
Post by: Ummon on March 11, 2009, 04:01:21 am
Well, I was playing mspac today and a couple interesting things happened. I got into a pickle and for some reason felt I might just go through Orange (we know this can happen, but I felt I'd make it, and it was the only option I had), and I did and went on. Nice.

Then, I was about to finish the board and thought I'd make it before Sue got me (head on)...but no!....I got munched....no, wait, I didn't! Even though I was completely covered by her. Yeah.

I've gone through Sue a couple times, but only in the sped up version with the real hardware. I've never been able to manage it with the slow on real hardware. I can't figure out the rhyme or reason as to when it happens though.

Were you playing the sped up version?

When you go thru a ghost, it's called a "booey". I believe it's when you and the ghost exit the tiles you occupy at the same time, so the game doesn't detect the collision. I've seen some 9th key patterns on Pac-Man that had as many as 9 booeys!

I have passed through a ghost on the normal (non-speed-up) version several times. You get a cold chill through your body when it happens - pretty spooky. Just kidding. But really, it happens to me playing the regular game. When it does, I always go "awwww" because then I feel like my score shouldn't count. But hey, it's not my fault the game screwed up... :)

Eric.

Here's a link to the exact part of the article on this ghost phenomenon:

Yeah, I caught the 'booey' thread at MW. After reading it I still had no idea what the hell was happening, because I didn't know about the pixel-sharing thing. Hmmm. Masterful in its own way, but yeah in normal cases its accidental nature means you were gonna get boned in the ass.

Makes for interesting reading, but can't get over just how banal some of the facts are.
