Title: is this possible ?
Post by: tteettuk on March 03, 2009, 03:58:17 pm
I have a pc with a 160 watt power supply, I want to build it all in to a new cabinet and upgrade the power supply to 450 watt, I want the power supply to also power my touch screen monitor, which is rated at 45 watt, 12 volts, 4.5 amps.
Will the new power supply be able to power the pc and the monitor ? the new cabinet will be wall hung with the monitor fixed to the front of the cabinet. I just wanted it all to power up when the pc is turned on ...many thanks

if ur 450 w supply can source 5a of current @12v, it should work.
however,  i doubt the 12v lines are that heavy... could be wrong  :dunno
so,  check the supply specs !

Typical 450W PC supply will have two 12V rails.  One will be on the 4/8 pin ATX12V header which is used to power the CPU, and the other will be on the main ATX header as well as the disk drive connectors.  Each will likely be capable of supplying 10A or more.

Given that the PC can run off a 160W PSU, I doubt the mobo/CPU draws that much.  If you only have 1 HDD, you should be fine from a power standpoint.

If your mobo does not use the 4/8 pin ATX12V header, I'd go ahead and use that for your monitor.  That will give it a dedicated rail.  If the mobo does use that connector, just use a disk drive connector.  Use big wire (at least 18AWG) as 4.5A is a fair bit of current, and voltage drop on smaller wire will become apparent fairly quickly.

Just watch out for ground loops.  Some devices intended to run off isolated "brick" type supplies reference their incoming power to strange places, which might result in a ground loop with the PC via the video cable.  Melting and/or smoke would ensue.  I've not known LCD monitors to do this, though.

Hi thanks, I had another thought, I could use the old power supply just to power the pc and add a new one the 450 watt one to power the monitor and a small audio amp ( It says in the paper work that it 1-1.5 current draw.
the new power supply has a in out iec connector, so from the mains i could connect to the new power supply (monitor and amp) and then connect from the new power supply to the old power to supply the pc...? any thoughts

I think you might just run each of your main devices to a surge protector unit. Easier and safer.
