Title: I sort of like spam every couple of years or when camping but WTF
Post by: BobA on February 27, 2009, 06:01:16 pm
Spam has been around for a long, long time and if you are from Hawaii it is really popular but what about some of the things they are now putting in a can? What about that really bad corned beef that comes in a can with large blood vessels and other treats.   There is Spam which I can eat but then there is 99 cent luncheon meat that I am afraid to try.

You've got to love that milk gravy.  ;D

I can't believe its legal to sell brain meat, though I guess if it isn't cow brain there isn't much worry of Mad Cow. Not to mention 1170% of the "daily allowance" of Cholesterol. That disturbs me more than anything.

Popular is a bit of an understatement. When I worked as a Resetter for the chain, the Hawaiian stores actually specify an entire isle dedicated to SPAM. If you've ever seen the size of Safeway stores, this works out to be something like 30 or more feet of shelf space.  :dizzy: The most I've ever seen in the lower 48 is something like 6 (or is it 8, can't remember) feet of shelving dedicated to SPAM.

the Hawaiian stores

Probably because they have to import most of the meats, and the high shipping costs
are passed on to the customers.   Spam being much cheaper... then becomes much
more of an option, especially when you are on a very tight budget.

From what I hear recently from a woman who went there on vacation... the rising
fuel cost have hit them really hard.  Much more so than others.  Tourism is
their main income.. and many people are not traveling there...   As well as the
increase in import (fuel)  charges.

You can get this nice range-fed Brazillian sirloin (or something) roast in a can at Trader Joe's. They have good tongol tuna, too. If you're gonna plan for cataclysm, make sure you eat in some style.
