What model is it? I have the entire assembly manual for the 9400/E1705 that I can shoot you. Pretty damn useful when I was trying to repair the fans just last week.
If it's not the 9400/E1705, I can see if I can locate some other Inspiron manual. Dell makes the service available sometimes.

bad video card?
-
check the cable going from the laptop to the screen, maybe reseat it.

support.dell.com, then look up your service tag or model. That will take you to a manuals section where each laptop has a teardown section, as well as basic troubleshooting for issues like a video cable, etc.

I just finish working on the same laptop. Person drop it and the sound no longer works and not getting power to it. So i took it apart found the power connecter on the main board was loose. I re-soldered all points and BINGO.
Did not get far with fixing the sound but got him a USB Sound card and a piar of speakers ;D

Took me a little over half an hour for dissassembly/reassembly time. There's not a lot of shortcuts to drill down to the core of those laptops.
-
took me 1.5 hr to take apart
.5 to put back together

I fixed a 5100 with the same problem. Turned out to be a BIOS issue. Take the mobo out and disconnect the battery for a couple days. After that, booted right up.
