I might have missed the explanation, but how come I can't lock my own thread?

Because while your question may be answered, others might still be benefiting from the topic being discussed.

That's my guess, anyway.  Obviously I have no actuall authority on the matter.

I don't recall what it was like before, but there hasn't been any conscious decision to prevent this.  I'll look at it.
