Title: Classic movies that just jump the shark
Post by: Ummon on February 22, 2009, 04:16:37 am
I just finished the original Invasion of the Body Snatchers. It was fun at first. However, in the first 'body' scene, I immediately thought, 'Where the hell did that thing come from?', and I kept waiting for them to say it. There's just too much more, but what really blew things was the leading lady just becoming one of THEM. Like, she just falls asleep and that's enough to make her one. I think I've only seen this once before - when I was in grade school on the saturday afternoon science fiction theatre - and I think I didn't get this part, then. I mean, wait a minute - why do we need the pods again? (The guys offstage are scratching their heads, looking at the script, right? Heheheh.) Oh well, it was cute, and between McCarthy's performance and the brunettes (although, damn they's skinny), it was worth it.

IIRC, part of the "scare" from those early films is not seeing the creature that gets everyone or not explaining exactly how you get killed off thus leaving it open to interpretation. A way to increase the suspense of the film, kind of like not showing the Wampa in the original The Empire Strikes Back.

Kind of hard to pick out a "classic" film that's jumped the shark. It's precisely what makes them classic, they're good enough to be seen and enjoyed over and over again by generations.

Hhmmm... hard to think of any particular old films off the top of my head... I guess it's not a classic but Revenge of the Nerds comes to mind. The first film rocked (as it were) and every film thereafter got progressively worse.

I disagree. Plenty of SF in those times. The problem is that most the movies were more like pulp scifi.

By CLASSIC I mean anything before the 60s - just like Classic Rock is anything in the 60s, and Oldies are the 50s.

That doesn't "jump the shark." To do that, something has to be going along fine, then suddenly does something to ruin everything.

The crying game.... was actually a decent movie up until...you know...

I can't think of any true classic movies that would jump the shark, because then it wouldn't be a 'classic'. Duh!

I love Plan 9. I have a whole boxset of Ed Wood films, though.
