Title: just got an Ultracade
Post by: ultramike on February 19, 2009, 11:42:39 pm
hi, new to the forum. just picked up an ultracade. i read alot about this machine on your forum. i was wondering if anyone had a list of all the games that were availible? can the joysticks/track ball be upgraded? not sure if i want to, but i was wondering if i can use an LCD monitor? this looks like a cool site. great to see people into classic games. i think i just found a new expensive hobby. i tried to post some pictures, but they were too big. any info would be big help . thanks again, mike

You might want to explain what you mean by "upgrading" joystick and trackball. Upgrade to what?? And why swap the monitor to a crappy LCD?

Needs to be more concerned with being able to upgrade the games.  :P

i was just wondering about the monitor, because i have a 20", and i wanted to upgrade to a bigger one for cod waw for my pc. this unit came with a 100 game disc, and a track ball disc, and a midway 8 game disc. maybe im getting old, but the joystick, and the track wheel  dont feel like the original games. i was into robotron back in the day, and the joy stick feels hard to hit the angles.

i use to play spy hunter, and all the donkey kongs, and a bunch of other games that are already  on this system. but it looks like you have to buy multi game discs to get one or two games you need. dont get me wrong, its mint to have a bunch of 80's games all in one place. i was just wondering if someone sold individual game for this system. and if there are joy sticks that feel more like the old robotron game did.

The original Robotron sticks were leaf switches (yours has microswitches) and rubber restrictors (yours probably has a spring).
Original Robotron sticks are occasionally available, but they're pricey.

As for adding more games, I think you're better off running a MAME setup. You're 90% of the way there with what you have.

Ebay search for Ultracade game packs and you'll quickly see what the fuss is about on upgrading games.
Also do a search on this forum and you'll learn that there is NO guarantee that a game pack you buy will even work on your machine.

C'mon, the guy asked a question about building a MAME cab and nobody refers to the BYOAC wiki (http://wiki.arcadecontrols.com/wiki/Main_Page) ? Are you guys getting kickbacks from Google like Google gets from those harddrive manufacturers ?  ;)

If you are going to be a smartass, at least be a BYOAC-promoting smartass !

Ultramike: In your place I would start reading stuff like the wiki, but would also entertain keeping it as an Ultracade, or perhaps selling the Ultracade guts if you choose to drop a MAME rig in there. As much as people here deride the Ultracade, it has a nice front-end and licensed games. It can be expensive to upgrade as the games are, in fact, licensed and I'm not sure how much support there is now, but I prefer cabinets with fewer games as opposed to cabinets with eleventy brazillion games.

To the best of my knowledge, this is what they are now.....

Good luck on the support aspect.
I didn't find anything on the upgrade packs there either. (didn't look hard though)

I got bitched at the other day, so I gave a different answer than normal (wasn't even my answer, just me being a jerkoff). I updated the Let Me Google That For You to do better.

i think im just gonna replace the plexiglass, fix the cabbinet damage, replace the missing t molding and enjoy it in stock condition.  im gonna do my home work and build a new rig. ill end up changing everything, and want a bigger cabinet anyway.  i did google my system. thats how i found this site.  i did find upgrade discs. the one with spyhunter has 20 games, i have 6 of them already, and i only want 3 of the games on the disc.   it was $200.00 and like someone said, i dont know if that version will load on my machine. if a good deal on an upgrade disc comes along, maybe ill take a chance, i think im better off starting fresh. thanks for the info.

You're not missing out on much since Spy Hunter must be played with a steering wheel and pedal.

Oh, that's where it's from. Have only seen it once, and that was over twenty years ago. I remember there being intense rumors about movies like that, kids saying the stuff was real an all.

I had a nice 19'' LCD on a vesa rotating mount so vert games were actually 19''s and to be honest i'd leave the CRT beause you have better viewing angles and no lag i went from a 19'' lcd to a 24.8 nieman crt for my MAME cabinet. If you want a larger screen, see about upgrading it to a larger CRT. Just my 2 cents.

and my replica i attempted to make for hyperspin to use (but ended up making a cooler one for them:

With all the references to David R Foley I just thought I would add this Youtube interview.

Doesn't seem that bad a guy if you let go of that old copyright stuff that went on a while a go.  The UltraPin and new FP interface look good so maybe he is a bit too busy to see what is going on here right now.   If not at least Know The Face of Your Enemy.     ;D ;D ;D ;D
