Title: Boneyard Arcade Burning
Post by: testicle187 on February 15, 2009, 09:29:43 pm
I'm not sure if this has been posted here before or not, but I just saw a link to this site on craiglist.  I wonder if this is really necessary...

I must admit I've done a few that way myself.
They have to be really bad though before that happens.
(usually water damaged like they were out in the rain or something)
Quick and clean way to dispose of them for sure.

Those guys seem to strip more than they fix though. (my opinion)

Doesn't matter. If you check that site's home page, you'll find this:
Quote

If your looking for something and dont see it listed contact me....

He makes it a point to destroy the cabs, not resurrect, restore or even sell empty cabs.

maybe. i remember there was a furore over a defender (i think) that shared a similar fate. might have even been the same guy. anyway, once you looked closer, it really was a write off. you could see the edges were all swollen from water ingress.

at the volume at which this guy is destroying them, after stripping them for parts, theres no way hes taking a closer look or even bothering to restore. hes basically bragging about being an arcade chop shop and the pictures show he doesnt care about arcades at all and thinks its "cool" to ignite them.

vid killer, heres a thought, stop taking so much pride in destroying what we try to preserve.
Arcade Bone Yard, Vid Killer, skulls, grim reapers.....we get it, your a goth turd.

The jungle king on this page is TOTALLY restore-able, you just think its cool to burn em, much like that other ---uvula--- who was taking a ---steaming pile of meadow muffin--- in the asteroids cabinet.

I'll never buy a single thing from you and I will deter any and everyone I know from dealing with you. Hopefully your business will die very soon because you're destroying what cant be replaced.

The worst part is you think that converting an operation thunderbolt into an MKII and having a gauntlet converted into X-Men are good things. They aren't. Your Tekken 2 Space Ace makes my head hurt. And using the age old excuse of "it was converted to something else first" doesn't cut the mustard around here, not once you've seen the Trivia game converted back to Pac-Man

Speckle paint, generic marquee, and multigame board < (is less then) Gauntlet

Your Ninja Turtles "conversion" is laughable at best. How can 4 people stand in front of that machine at once?

I digress, looking at your geocities-esque site for examples is just pissing me off.

While I agree the cabs appear quite structurally sound, and that their fate is unfortunate, it's possible his region doesn't allow much interest in them.

The last auction I went to they had the back room filled with gutted cabs.  They wouldn't be able to give them all away, so I assumed they were going to call one of those traveling dumpsters to pick them up.

These aren't irreplaceable works of art.  They're flimsily nailed together pieces of plywood.  Anyone with the skills needed to restore those cabinets could build new one 10x better at half the cost and energy it takes to restore it.

The irreplaceable parts have been saved, heck, they may have even been put into a new cabinet that’ll last years longer than the one they were removed from.

the people you should be mad at are the ones who are holding onto an original cabinet that they can't fix so it's being used as a condo for mice in their shed.

I see your point. However, it's not entirely true. Until many of these cabinets are archived in some manner, they are indeed irreplaceable. The death of a Death Race (http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php?topic=65774.0) is a prime example. AFAIK, there are two versions of the cabinet (http://klov.com/game_detail.php?game_id=7541) and archiving the complete artwork is still not done. Much less any record of the actual construction of the cabinet itself.

I understand that not every cabinet can be saved. This is a fact that holds true for every archiving project. Something I had to deal with on a daily basis at my last job.

People have to keep in mind that one should save as much as feasibly possible, especially when there's a historical context. No matter how well we may record and reproduce the cabinets, I'll bet that in the next twenty years, techniques, or concepts, or new technologies or whatever will come within our grasp and our reproductions will be even better. Take for example the Hellomat (http://www.localarcade.com/arcade_art/details.php?image_id=1431) (yes, I know it's not exactly an arcade game, that's not the point) marquee with the reflective surface. Would you rather someone who is looking to reproduce a marquee like that look at a scanned (and incorrect) image or look at the real thing?

i offer cabs for sale all the time    at the highest  $25
as far as taking pride in killing off games     you reading into things the wrong way  im figuring if not worth anything  at least get a couple pics out of them     and really do you think im getting these games for free   these are items i have pruchased to do with what i feel like  and if i choose to burn junk instead of hauling to the dump its my choice  .  im sure most  arcade ppl have scrapped out games   unless brand new to this
if what im doing bothers you so much  dont ever go by a vending company thats closing, relocating  downsizing   who would you complain too when you see 30 yard dumpsters full of the same kind of junk
If these are so worth saving    im having a sale on empty cabs for $10     on 3- 20 to 3 -23
lets see if you even attempt to save just one
as far as comment on some of the games i put back together   i know 4 people cant fit in front of that turtles it has 4 sticks to choose each of the 4 characters      when was the last time you actually saw 4 people in front a game playing it who paid to play it
again a comment on that taito water swelled cab      if that looked restorable to you   i have a great deal for ya

and no im not a goth guy
its a theme      the boneyard       dont strain yourself trying to figure it out

the volume is currently at 10   not quite a devastating blow to the arcade hobby

in the years ive been into arcade games ive restored or repaired more games than the average hobbiest by far
used to sell games retail and would get out about 1 to 5 a week  back years ago in the north east

as far as that defender cab it is still available   so is the dig dug   gorf   tempest     come   buy them and restore them

I'll restore as many cabs as your willing to send to me at no cost. I cant support a your business for what you do, and Im not gonna pay shipping on an empty cab from Florida to Maryland.

Sugar coat and spin it all you want, arcade machines are fading very fast, and you arent exactly part of the solution.

I'm not taking sides here but I have been over to this fellows place and have made some purchases from him and he is really nice fellow.
His storage trailers have fans to control humidity and keep things cooler and prices are reasonable.

Some of the cabs may look ok in a pic but in person there is pretty bad damage the humidity in Florida is killer on particle board and alot of these units are placed near beaches and the likes with salt air that corrodes badly the boards.

In north Florida there is hardly any place to get anything arcade related he fills a niche.
