Title: Mame problem- joystick fires gamma/screen position without shift key
Post by: swamprat96 on February 13, 2009, 04:44:30 pm
KIds were playing the mame cab I have last night and obviously found some sequence of keys that has stuffed up mame

Now in mame Player 1 joystick up brings up the mame menu for gamma and screen position - without the shift key (player 1) being touched.

I've checked the ipac board and it is configured correctly for keys. I rum mala so I tried mame by itself and the problem is still there. The mame ini is dated some 3 weeks ago when I did my final compile so I don't think it has changed

Any clues? I cant work out how to fix it and also what happened

UPDATE - I just found out that the tilda key is not working- so it looks like a key has been changed- how do I fix this

I worked this out eventually. To change to UI controls there is a menu in Mame pressing TAB. But what I could not work out is how they had been changed.

Then I spoke to the kids- and they had brought the mame menu up accidently and not knowing how to get out, prsssing buttons madly changed the UI key assignment

Being a relative mame newbie I had thought that the combination of player1 and right joystick (tab with I-pac) was a good option to have to get into mame when necessary. But I've now totally disabled access from the controls as people inadvertently press the wrong buttons playing the cabinet. I've even had to disable info and history in Mala.

AS I've put an external USB port on the cab I now have to plug the keyboard in for access to the system - PITA but I've had no more issues with menu's popping up

Glad you got it working.

My 2 cents:
No action button, joystick, coin or start button should be a shift button, or combo with any other of same buttons, for menu, exit, pause, etc.  Never ever.  For the exact reasons you found out (the hard way).

Others here seem to have no problems, but IMO one problem is far too many in something that can be prevented with an extra "config only" button, or keyboard like you've done (wireless might be easier).
