Title: how would i. use a rotary or momentary switch to light up single led's (10).?

A buddy of mine is getting ready to build a holdem' poker table. He is wanting to make 10 position available at the table. He has asked me how it would be possible to light up say an led at each position with either a push of a button. Then when the button is pressed again it would move to the next person in play (Basically a dealer button but using leds). I first thought it would be simple enough to just purchase a 10 position rotary switch feed it with a 9v run it through a resistor and out to the leds. But I am no electronics expert so I asked for help on another forum.

they have yet to come up with anything solid. Is there anyone here who is familiar with electronics and could help me in coming up with a way to do this in a simple manor?

You need a counter circuit
This may be of some help to you replacing the display with single leds

this stuff is getting above my head haha.. i somewhat follow those but I have never taken an electronics class. Is there not a chip that has (X) amounts of output (I am wanting 10). Like does the CD4017 have a certain amount of outputs that I can wire up to leds or will i still need a 555 counter chip?
I am pretty lost haha

Use a 4017 counter with 10 decoded ouputs. (all in a single chip).  You might have to debounce or condition the output of a momentary PB to get it to count properly.
