The idea for this thread stems from a conversation I've been having with Ginsu about his Ibanez. Talk about your guitars and guitar-playing, etc.
So, Ginsu, you heathen! Stock pick-ups?? (Heheheheh.)

Well, I used to, back when I was in an ever-rotating group of punk rock bands; MANY years ago; I had an "RS Straycat" ... some no-frills fender look-alike. I do still have a Takahani (sp?) acoustic 12-string with electric pickup, but it's in need of new strings .. and I need an electric tuner ... and some free time to remember how to play :(

I suck at guitar, much more of rhythm person, but I have a Jimmy Vaughn signature Strat, which I won in a drawing from Fender. It was presented to me on stage by Jimmy Vaughn at the Catalina Blues Festival where he was headlining, and of course he signed it for me, back in 1995 I think. It is stock; no mods. It's on my list of "crap to learn" I have a Squire Tele and a cheap little amp...and a lot of guilt that ive let it gather a bit of dust lately

I bought a relatively nice MiM Fender Stratocaster Deluxe for $50 at a garage sale a year ago. It came complete with horribly rusty bridge and corroded pickups but it had a perfect neck and excellent body. According to the serial its a 99. My brother and I rebuilt it and I've been trying to self-teach ever since. I'd never want to start a band, but it just seems like a good idea to have a small skill at something.

I have a 50th anniversary MIA lonestar fat strat that's in my truck right now. I'm bringing it in to see how much they'd give me for it. I'm selling it because I want a new bass and new pickups for old bass.

To be fair, I mean "stock" as in "the ones that were in it when I got it...which may or may not be the stock pickups". I bought it from a friend who is a guitar tech. He took excellent care of that guitar (and has begged for it back on many occasions) and I'm just not as technical with guitars. Despite having played for over 19 years, I've barely touched my guitar for most of the last year, ever since I got my MAME cabinet. Any free time is spent drilling, painting, soldering, working on software, or lurking here.

I used to play a long time ago... was quite good at playing "Stairway to Heaven" actually :P I had a friend who had an original Gibson SG... that thing was sweet!!!

I tinker a bit, but still suck. No fancy guitar for me - Harmony H802. Got it for $20 off my father-in-law.

My brother picked up a Gretsch Bass and a practice amp from a pawnshop for me for a birthday a while back. I love bass, but my mame habit has kinda gotten in the way of me practicing it.
I have no idea whether it's a good bass or not, I know almost nothing about guitars/basses. But it IS fun!

That about covers it. I don't play much anymore due to kids and their hockey and work and evil glares from the wife when I leave the family to go downstairs and crank some tunes out...

I played for about two years back when I was 17 or 18... damn that was 19 years ago! I am getting old! I had a cheap Peavey Patriot guitar and Peavey Backstage Plus amp. I was never very good.
I've always wanted a Paul Reed Smith, those things are incredible!
I've kicked around the idea of getting another guitar, but I know with everything else I have going on, it would just collect dust... maybe someday.

I bought a cheap Peavey and an expensive Fender amp, with the intention of learning to play on the Peavey and eventually buying a better guitar.
I took a group class that required an acoustic so I bought one that can plug into my amp, because I need to get as much out of that amp as I can.
The group class ended up being $100 to practice cords for an hour a week for a month. It wasn't all bad since I did actually practice every day because I didn't want to embarrass myself in front of the hot chicks taking the class.
I just got a SongXpress learn guitar DVD from Netfix I'll have time to try it tomorrow night.

I priced it here, and it was going to be ~$35 or so for a half hour one on one class.
Whatever happened to the kid that needs weed money? My brother learned a hell of a lot from a dude like that at $10/lesson.
Guitar Hero is what happened to those kids.
I have an Ibanez bass, but I suck. Wish I dedicated the time to it when I was younger and not so busy (any instrument for that matter).

I was just telling a friend mine the same thing.
About guitar hero, though, he was telling me that over the last year or so, Guitar and bass sales have soared, and they're attributing the interest in Guitar Hero and Rock band. If true, I'd say that's not a bad thing at all.
Hopefully, i can encourage my daughter to take up an instrument soon, while she can still soak things up like a sponge :)

Just thought of something maybe you guys can help me with. I need a "new" amp. Not new in the sense new out of box, but something different. I'm currently using a modified Wal Mart amp. Obvious this leaves a lot to desire. I need something pretty universal playing style wise. I'd like it to be a little larger than a practice amp, but nothing huge. Nothing for performances, but I want something that will sound good without breaking the non-existent bank.

I remember in the mid-to-late 90s they were coming out with 'seasoned' pick-ups: rusted and dirty, etc. Also remember those little smoke pack amps. Never bought any of that stuff, of course.

That's too bad. Unfortunately, learning about music isn't the really important in pop culture.

Universal means modeling amp. Go to your local store that has a decent selection of guitar stuff...or you might go to guitar center....and see what they got, check it out.

Stock are pickups that came with it from the manufacturer. If you don't know what they are, then the answer is 'I don't know'. If they have something like V8 and V7 or whatever, then they're likely really stock.
I used to have an Ibanez RG520QS, pictured below, but something happened to it. Seriously, to this day, I just don't know what. I got it back in the end of '99. A few months later, I got an all-mahogany, neck-thru Carvin DC-127 (also below), and currently have a Dimarzio Tone Zone in the bridge. I almost strictly play high gain, so I don't much care what's in the neck position.
I've been through several set-ups, both solid state and digital. Nothing tube, because of price and necessity of loudness for tone...although I tried an Engl Invader last year, and that was pretty awesome. Pictured below is my current rig - however, I never play it because I live in an apartment, and I besides I don't have anyone to jam with, so I always play through a Rocktron Taboo artist, via headphone. Totally digital preamp, with cabinet simulation, etc.
And, as I've been thinking of playing for a few days now, I'm going to for a spell...

Heh. I don't believe these were seasoned in the same respect...

Edit: I never noticed the plastic wrap still under that tone pot until just now and I even replaced those pots and knobs...

Dude. That looks like it was played with in the sand on the beach. I always wipe mine down after playing. I can use strings for months because of this.

I know. It also must have been kept in a really humid basement or something. The body and neck have no signs of water damage but every metal surface was either rusted or turning green. Needless to say, it looks a bit better now.

I play badly...
...I can jam a pretty spiffy death metal riff. No leads and I only use the top 3 or 4 strings. Power chords... but at least I can create the semblance of a "tune".
I have a ---smurfy--- Hammer Jammer strat copy that was coupled with Fender practice amp, but recently I acquired an Xavier with a slightly bigger Marshall practice amp. I used to dink around with `em more often but lately they've been sitting around collecting dust.

I'm not surprised with how busy you've been in arcade matters an all.
Yeah, that's how I was the first three years. I didn't even play other people's music, just made my own. It was different for me in that I early on bought a half stack, and continually added to my gear (in some cases ignorantly, because I didn't try out enough gear before making a decision on what I did). Then I started playing with a real guitarist, and some things changed. I also had started studying music in school, and a lot of things changed.
