Title: Tempered, Smoked Glass (Every See This)?
Post by: Visitor Q on February 09, 2009, 12:15:04 pm
I installed smoked glass in front of my arcade monitor and I am noticing something strange. I really do not know how to explain it other than it looks like small specs of spit or water on the glass. I am 100% sure it is not the monitor as when the glass is not on, it’s not there. Also when I take the glass and shine it up towards a light I don’t see it either. It is something that happens only when the glass is placed in front of the monitor. It is also more apparent with a white background rather than black. I mean I wish I could say it a better way, there like little prism type specs that do not wipe off. I have cleaned the glass several times both inside and out.

Thoughts?
Ideas?

Sounds like bubbles under the tint.

Gah don't say that.  Isn't this the same glass you were raving about on your Metal Slug Arcade thread?  How long did it take for you to notice it?  I ordered like the exact same glass as you from One Day Glass.  It's supposed to be delivered today.  I'll get installed tonight and I'll see if I see the same thing.

Could be impurities in the glass....or a thousand souls of lost leprechauns trying to find there way back to our realm for total domination of the world...( sorry I was forced to watch Leprechan last night )  :blah:

Is it spots?

What did you clean it with?

I was always told that cleaning with newspaper  (sports page) works best...also you can wax and polish the glass the same as how you would polish a car...Friend of mine said you can get glass polisher from any autoparts place. Or to be cheap, use car wax.

I'm just going off from what I am reading....

If this isnt the solution, then I also agree with Ginsu

Maybe you got polarized?  ;)

I think I've seen the effect you're talking about with some plexiglass. But you're talking about real glass, right?

Yes... Real Glass.

Yes... From One Day Glass

Should I call the place I bought this about this or is this something normal?

I'd call them and ask.

Just got off the phone with them and they claim they have never really seen this. I am going to try and take some pictures or a video tonight to show them what is going on.

I know a lot of people on here have order from ODG before so that is why I was wondering if anyone has seen this.  ???

Have you seen this anomaly with any other kind of light source directly behind the glass ?

Honestly... No. I tried holding it up to the florescent light and no, I did not see it. I could maybe make it happen if I put it infront of my tv or something... It's kinda strange. It's like you want to wipe it off and you can't!  :-\

ODG said they could not think of what it could be.

Ok....so you dont see it when you look at it straight on...but at an angle right?

Is it this you are seeing?

This is not true. Maybe easier to be seen from an angle though.

No... It looks nothing at all like that.

I am trying to find pictures of it but I can't. The above picture looks like someone spilt gas on the glass, this is more like pixels or small rainbow like specks.

It sorta looks like this but imagine color and square specks.

VQ:

I looked at this on my setup.  I have the same glass and monitor as you do.  I ran up Notepad and maximized it on the screen (giving me a mostly white background).  I didn't see anything like you're describing in the glass.

Can you replicate the problem by holding the glass in front of some other light source?

I don't think so.

I am going to try and take pix tonight.

Are you using a curved monitor?  Is it the light coming out and deflecting wrong off the glass for some oddball reason maybe owing to the coating?

Maybe try placing the glass in front of a regular tube TV and see if the curvature of that causes it?

Monitor has a flat screen.

I've seen it.  It might be crap on the glass.  Get a razor blade and some glass cleaner. Try scraping it off.  Might take a few minutes.

I don't know guys... It's not on the monitor and I have cleaned the glass several times.

Also I've tried, I can't photo it but I can video capture it... Still very hard to see unless you are infront of it.

Try using some kind of polish designed for minimizing small scratches on plastic.  These usually have a bit of wax in them that fills the fine surface imperfections and shines up when you buff it.

It sounds to me like what is called a "short finish" in the industry.  Essentially, if the glass is not produced by being simply floated out on a pool of molten tin, it may have gone through grind and polish steps.  Sometimes, a grind step isn't performed long enough to get rid of the coarser grind performed previously, so the polish step can't overcome the residual surface damage.

If it isn't ground and polished, then it's possible that when it was tempered, it was put into the oven dirty.  If that's the case, it's likely that the dirt has now permanently altered the surface.  It could literally have a zillion tiny concave impressions that are acting like little lenses that magnify the dot grid of the CRT in those spots.  This would give you the weird color sparkle you mentioned.  It would only give you that effect with a monitor, and would probably be mostly imperceptible with anything else.

Does it change if you flip the glass front to back?

Good News! They are shipping me out another piece to try.  :applaud:

I'll keep you all posted.

ps. Looks the same even when you flip it.

I have seen this exact thing when I wear my sunglasses will driving.  A lot of people's back window have all these little circles on them ...... kinds of weird to see.   Remove my glasses an they disappear.

Just got my glass installed.  It's the same as yours, solar grey, pencil grind finish... a bit bigger than yours.  I haven't spent too much time with it, but right off the bat, I can't see anything like you're describing.

Beats Me.  :dunno

I just hope the new glass doesn't have it.

If the new glass doesn't fix it, you know it has to be the monitor.  I feel like I've seen the thing you're talking about but I can't place.  Good luck!!

Is the glass touching the screen? Does it stay the same when the glass is say 1mm away, or 5mm?

It's not the monitor, it does not look like this with the glass not in place.

The glass does not touch the screen; it is at least as far away as the depth of a monitor bezel.

***NOTE*** You can not see the issue I am having in the below picture, it is just to represent the depth of the glass to the monitor.

I'm curious to see what happens with the new glass.  I was thinking about ordering the from ODG as well (tinted).

P.S. - Nice Captain Crunch poster.

I will keep everyone posted.

ps. That is not a Capt. Crunch poster; it is a painting off all these cereal mascots at war with each other. I would post a picture but I don’t have one here at work.

By the same artist that drew this...

I'm slightly familiar with his work, but not really.  I remember seeing one that he did that had two head merged together with 5 eyes.

But I can see why you like him.  He uses a lot of monster themed stuff.    ;)

I got the new piece of glass an although it is better than the first, the imperfections are still there.

I am not sure if my eyes are just drawn to it more than others or if I am overacting, but I can live with it at this point.

I can only guess that it has something to do with the tinting process.
