Title: usb hub suggestions - so frustarted
Post by: tony.silveira on February 09, 2009, 01:45:50 am
hi all,

might anyone have a suggestion for a rock solid usb hub?

it seems i go thru a new hub once every couple of months; one of the ports will go out or start acting up.  my current issue has my mini-pac randomly flipping out on me.  out of nowhere it will start sending multiple key presses.  when i unplug the mini-pac from the hub and reattach it, it goes back to normal.

just looking for a solid usb hub as everyone i've had goes on the fritz sooner rather than later.

thanks

Drawing too much power from a USB port maybe ?

Make sure you get a USB 1.1 hub. My mouse devices go mental if I use them in a USB2 hub.

My guess as well.  Perhaps a new power supply is in order?  Personally, I always buy USB hubs that have their own power supply and I've never had an issue with any brand.

I've had good luck with this industrial strength hub:

Wow, that thing looks like a beast. $50 for the 7 port model doesn't look half bad either.

A lot of cheap USB hubs seem to have virtually no ESD protection on them.  This can cause all sorts of flakey behavior if a port gets static zapped.  I'm guessing that high-end "industrial" hub would have all sorts of protection, but who knows.

Weird issues like this can also be a result of poor grounding causing static discharge EMI events.  Make sure all metal surfaces on your CP (and elsewhere) are tied to the earth (safety) ground line coming from the wall using heavy wire.

Sweet! How many amps is the power supply?
