Post by: mytymaus007 on February 08, 2009, 08:37:56 pm
Im Building a control panel with one 360 degrees wheel on One side and on the other side a star wars yoke, What do think would be the best Racing Shifter for each side. Im running Mame .128 is there still pole position shifter problem or shuld I go with shifter mame.  Any one build a control panel and experience the best set up for racing games

Alot depends on what games you want to play.
If you want to play Sprint, Super Bug, or any of the other games that used a 4-position shifter, get a 4-speed shifter.

Most of the other games use a normal Hi-Lo shifter.

The best shifter I've found for Pole Position is a Hi/Low Return to Center shifter.
That will let you shift in either direction, so it can't get messed up.
The shifters that don't return to center will let you shift slightly out of HI and back into HI, but let the game go to LOW.

I have a 4-speed shifter for my 360 deg wheel panel, and it pretty much covers all (360deg wheel) games. It can be used for the lo/hi games, although yes AFAIK Pole Position and many other games still have the input in Mame as this dodgy 'toggle' method, so I use my ShifterMame360 build which fixes this. Most games are lo/hi with a handful of 4 speed...most of which I am not too keen on except of course Night Driver :)

For my yoke panel (270deg wheel games), I have a lo/hi turbo shifter. This is good for most games that I play, but there are a few 'tiptronic' (lo/hi return to centre) shifter games, and also some 4-speed. The latter two types are more common on newish and 3D games.

Note that many of the lo/hi 270deg wheel games suffer with the same shifter problem in standard Mame. I am almost ready to release a new version of ShifterMame which also deals with most of these, although I have not included many of the 3D games as my PC struggles to run them and it is painful to test  :-\

The best all-around solution is to go modular.
That way you can mix the steering wheels with the shifters, and not have to buy multiples of anything.
It will also look alot cleaner than having two shifters.

If i didnt go with a swappable panel would it be safe to say for
360 degree- 4 speed shifter

270 degree- 4 speed shifter and turbo shifter
For return to center games can i get away with using a turbo shifter or should i get a turbo return to center for all hi and low and return to center games not sure which would cover all games
