Title: Finishing Tip: obscuring mistakes in laminate
Post by: rampy on June 25, 2003, 01:12:48 pm
This weekend I got a chance to show my brother in law my cabinet and was explaining how I had some ...er... holidays or less than perfect edges on the outside where my flush cutting bit had it's bearing disinitigrate.

He had a novel suggestion, which I'd like to share (but haven't tried yet).

He suggested for my rough looking edges near my t-molding aroudn the perimeter of the control panel to get some black latex/water based caulking (he's a plumber)... (you can get other colors if that's what you need) to fill in that crack/groove make it flush.

Now granted this won't work for everyones mistakes, but might do the trick for my particular gaff.  Granted this will create a "seal" between my t-molding and my CP... but should I need to remove the t-molding caulking is easy to scrape off.

If you think about it... that's what is often done with kitchen counter tops (although there's a more functional need there to repel water rather than just making the seem look nice) and the backsplash/wall...

*shrug* when I get a chance to try it I'll take close ups of my gashes and after shots ---> but i thought it was a modest little idea worth sharing.

1up found some stuff that is made specifically for repair on laminate and there is a formula table so you can get the right color for all the different colors offered by the different manufacturers.  I'll try to scrounge up the thread.

It wasn't expensive, though, so I'd recommend using it rather than experimenting on your child.

There are separate color tables for Wilsonart, Pionite and Formica colors so you should be able to get something perfect (including black)

Well If i had a chip in the middle of my laminate I might go that way... but for the type of unsightly-ness I have i'm still gonna give it a go with caulk. (I think I just want to go into a store and ask for some black caulk to fill in my crack)
