Title: Wanting to upgrade win98 oem to SE
Post by: Ummon on February 07, 2009, 07:37:06 pm
I happened across a 333mhz Celeron with oem win98. I'm having trouble with integrating a network card, and it also has this intermittent issue of not opening any files or windows after start-up. I have a win98se disc, but both from within the OS and booting from the se disc, it says there is already a version on the drive and it won't let me over-write or anything. What to do?   It comes to mind, is there some bios setting that might be affecting this?

Reformat it and boot from the SE CD.

Yep! Although I can't remember if you have the option to format before installing 98SE. You might have to boot into DOS and run fdisk, delete the partition and format. To format run "format C:" from DOS.

I don't think I have done this since Windows 2000 first came out, but Windows98 has an option somewhere to create a Startup disk. You can do that, then copy the extra DOS commands onto it (if it doesn't already do it) to be able to reformat C: from a floppy.

I think pretty much all BIOS's had the option to boot from the CD by the time his processor came out.

There is also bootdisk.com if you don't have a floppy drive, just burn the iso to a CD and boot it up.

Ahh. Yeah, that makes sense. I'll try that, thanks.

Yeah, that worked. Although, I think the network issue might've been my card. Still, the intermittent, 'folders/files not opening' thing is gone, too.

Now the only problem I'm having is getting a driver for the onboard that will do more than VGA @ 16 colors. The original installation had one. Not a big deal because of course it's only 2mb and all, but even at 16 colors I've been impressed that it passed mame .36 through on games like 1943 with 100% performance. Yeah, I know especially then GPU wasn't a big deal, but still. Then again, I was getting a strange backlighting effect, like if I'd turned up the brightness a bit, from the onboard when running black background games, so I'll probably just have to settle for using a PCI card.

No, it doesn't. Neither does it find anything when it searches the 98 CD. What's funny is  the oem installation on it before did have some kind of more advanced driver, as it could do at least XGA at 24bit.

what's the CARD or your MOBO. I have lots of Drivers for 98se way back in the days. I may have what you need.

Give me a snap of the MOBO and name/brand/model etc...

I couldn't find anything specific on it. I looked up the serial number at Gateway, and got some drivers and made a floppy boot disc, but it wouldn't boot.

Maybe this image will help.

The disk you made may not be a bootable disk. It may just contain the drivers. Did you look at the floppy in Windoze Explorer?

What model of Gateway is it?

Microsoft quit doing updates for Win98 years ago. You can't get anything from their site.

However you can go online and find sites that have all the fixes and all upgrade issued for Win98.

it looks like an INTEL MOBO.

Take a look at the ISA slot on its side, maybe it has some numbers.
I do remember working on this boards from the looks. I will look around in the garage.

I didn't make it. It's a real 98 disc.  The model is a GP-333.  I'll look for places with upgrades an all.

Yeah, it's a Celeron. No numbers by the ISA slot that I can see.

I looked and found something similar looking MOBO but it's not the right one.

Usually what I do b-4 wiping a system clean is to look in first like what video card it had, sound card, modem and I write them down or search for those files a copy.

Hope you still have the old OS so you can do that.

If not, jsut run it in PURE DOS, no need for VID Drivers.  :applaud:

MAME 36 should be enough for that beast.

Not exactly!  They did a sunset for Win98 and don't provide any NEW fixes.  The issue though is that you need to get IE6 first (or is it IE5?) - the pre-installed IE version with Win98 does not work with the new Windows Update.

Once you get that set up, you should be able to get the rest of the Windows updates automatically.

However you can go online and find sites that have all the fixes and all upgrade issued for Win98.
This is your best bet right here.  http://exuberant.ms11.net/98sesp.html has the "Unofficial Win98 Service Pack", which bundles up all the Win98 fixes, plus ports some usability / stability stuff back from WinME, and does some additional hacker magic to make the system even better.

You need to use a boot disk to install windows 98. It seems like you're just trying to use the Windows 98 cd.
To summarize:
1st. Boot Disk
2nd. Windows 98 cd

Thanks for the link, thats excellent. I have a Neo-Geo mini I want to be a very streamlined MAME machine. This sounds like it'd be a great foundation.

Its been a long time for me, but I'm pretty sure 98 will install from the CD if you have a bios that supports it.

How to Install Windows 98
After you partition and format your hard disk, you can install Windows 98: Insert the Windows 98 Startup disk in the floppy disk drive, and then restart your computer.
When the Windows 98 Startup menu is displayed, choose the Start computer with CD-ROM support option, and then press ENTER.
If CD-ROM support is provided by the generic drivers on the Startup disk, you receive one of the following messages, where X is the drive letter that is assigned to your CD-ROM drive:
Drive X: = Driver MSCD001

Drive X: = Driver OEMCD001
NOTE: If your CD-ROM drive is not available after you boot from the Windows 98 Startup disk, install the CD-ROM drivers that are included with your CD-ROM drive. For information about how to obtain and install the most current driver for your CD-ROM drive, view the documentation that is included with your device, or contact your hardware manufacturer.

Insert the Windows 98 CD-ROM in the CD-ROM drive, type the following command at a command prompt, and then press ENTER
X:\setup
where X is the drive letter that is assigned to your CD-ROM drive.

When you receive the following message, press ENTER, and then follow the instructions on the screen to complete the Setup procedure:
Please wait while the Setup initializes. Setup is now going to perform a routine check on your system. To continue press Enter.

That floppy just installs a generic CDROM driver so it can read the CD. If the bios supports Boot From CD, you don't need to do that. Gonna be a bit before I can verify it, I'm buried in stuff to do.

Well, the Mpact set worked. Had to restart twice I think, but then all was fine. (I also had sound issues after that, but was able to find something online. Win still asked me for the 98 disc I have, but it came out fine and sound works.)

Something about the vga output from the mobo, though; it really saturates the screen such that to have the 'background' black (or nearly so) on related games, I had to turn the brightness to zero on the monitor. What really surprised me was that the Mpact suite was powerful enough or whatever to allow hardware stretching in Mame. My PIII with upgraded 24mb of onboard video wouldn't do that.

Still, it might be easiest to use the PCI 32mb TNT I have, but we'll see. I haven't figured out how to set up boot to dos and all that to get the most out of it. Maybe I should've tried Spystyle's boot CD first.
