Title: Argh! My second Xbox 360 decided to RRoD last night...
Post by: Dazz on January 28, 2009, 08:42:31 am
Just in time for an ice storm to move in and not really have much to do my second Xbox 360 decided to RRoD with error E74 last night...  It looks like the GPU instead of the ANA/HANA chip.  So, thankfully I'll have this fixed shortly when I get my correct screws.

Damn, I hate having to fix companies piss poor design flaws.  I'm not sending it to MS because they would only replace the X-Clamp and it would probably fail again in 8 months anyway.  I am just going to do an X-Clamp fix on it and be done with it.  My last 360 that this happened to, I did an X-Clamp fix and it is still running almost 2 years later.

I could never get the X-clamp fix to work. I think I overcooked the GPU or something. Because it never booted right again.

I was just handed a RROD xbox and I'm going through the x-clamp fix now. No luck so far. It either goes right to 3 red lights or freezes after a few minutes, I will try the "penny fix" tonight. Hopefully I can bring it back to life.

I've been through 3 xboxs due to the infamous RROD and refuse to buy another one Microsoft pushed me to PS3 and I am glad they did one of the best consoles I've owned so far

I have a PS3 too, but it doesn't get near as much playtime as the 360 does.  But, I'll fix my 360 and not have to worry about it.  The first 360 that I fixed is still running about a year after the fix was done.  I ended up selling that one to a friend and getting a newer falcon system for myself.

I get my pre-launch manufactured console back from M$ tomorrow. Second time on this machine, so I'm actually one of the lucky ones. I'm thinking of using is for a couple months till I can scrape up enough to sell this one and buy an Elite. If I didn't already own all of the games I wanted for the 360, Id sell it and buy one of the old backward compatible PS3s...

I use a launch console but did all the cooling mods before anything even started and I can run it all day and it never gets hot.

even the new revised whatever's there putting out now are still toaster ovens and get the 3rol unless you do your own cooling your prone to getting the 3rol error.

I used the x-clamp kit arctic silver paste for gpu & cpu 9 volt fan mod instead of the stock 6V the 12V works also but very loud.

all 3rd party aftermarket fans internal or external are junk just mod the stock one's as there made to run higher in the first place.

the posterboard of the GPU and CPU with masking tape makes a huge difference as stock only sucks from about 20% of the front of the heatsink where the posterboard trick will get it to where it will pul from the rear all the way to the front to suck air from the whole heatsink not just the front part of it like M$ left lol.

also cut the metal grating out of the fan vents it was very dumb of them to do that as the hot air blows on the metal grate that metal heats up and as it heats it spreads it and makes its way through your whole xbox 360 chassis and the reason why I call them a toaster becuase the whole inners warm up frame and all eventually.

get that metal out of there so the hot air can leave without heating the whole frame and also it gets more hot air out that way becuase the metal is restricting it a tad it is not much but they all add up.

when I got mine I figured it would burn up in 10 minutes it felt like a hair dryer and I said screw that I am doing what can be done to get it cooler so I did them and now can run it all day and it does not even get warm really.

I did eveything before anything happend though so I stopped it before it even started becuase I knew I got one that would burn up if I did not just by feeling the massive amount of heat pouring out of it when stock.

On the X-Clamp fix the key to getting it going again is to let it overheat with all the screws loosened on the GPU and CPU.  Once it 2 rings for overheating, tighten them up evenly and THEN let it cool completely before you turn it on.  9 times out 10 it won't boot up because the screws are either too tight or too loose.  Lock washers thrown in the mix with the right amount of plastic spacers are effective for getting the right amount of tension.  That penny fix is garbage.

Also, drill out the old holes (the eight on your x-clamp fix) on the metal case with a 1/4" bit so you can reach your screws without the taking the whole motherboard out in the future.  It takes a few times to get a good lasting fix.  Sometimes the xbox is bad enough that you won't get a good fix and it will only last a day or a week, but every once in a while you get one that receives a permanent fix.  Good Luck.

I have a PS3, and it is in no way a suckfest

While the XBOX 360 might have some more exclusive games, why would you support a company that puts out such a poor product.  No trolling or anything, it is a fact that Xbox 360 hardware is not reliable (RROD)

I think the following are worth owning a PS3 for:

Little Big Planet
Virtua Fighter 5
Soul Calibur 4
Mortal Kombat vs. DC
Ninja Gaiden
Motorstorm
Full Auto 2
Ratchet and Clank: Tools of Destruction
The Bigs
NCAA College Football 09
All Pro Football 2K9
NHL 09
Super Street Fighter HD Remix
Tekken 5: Dark Resurrection
Super Stardust HD
Commando 3
Everyday Shooter
1942: Joint Strike
Bionic Commando: Rearmed
Lumines: Supernova
Street Fighter IV (coming soon) + Tournament edition Fightstick
Tekken 6 (coming soon)
Dragon's Lair (Blu Ray)
Space Ace (Blu Ray)

And many other games that arcade fans would agree are great!

While I did like the games on the 360 Ninja Gaiden 2 and GOW to name a few.  I think Microsoft really screwed themselves over by not making a reliable product.  For no reason should you have to do any after market modifications on a game console to keep it working, as far as I know the 360 is the only console thus far to require them. For me the last RROD did me in I will not support a company that manufactures faulty products and Microsoft considering their capital should be the last one releasing them. Well GL with fixing your console no should miss out considering how many great games are coming out.

Yeah most of that list is on the 360 as well, so why even mention them.

sorry did not mean to freak anyone out I was just letting others know I have a launch console that still works like a 360 should in the first place.

when I first got it I seen the 3rol error people were getting all over the internet so I hooked it up and let it run for about ten minutes and put my hand by the vents and it felt way to hot and I knew this console is bound to get the 3rol also if i leave it like that.

So I did the mods above to do what I could about getting it cooler and it does work great I am not sure if they are all required but I did whatever I could find to get it cooled down and it worked and the console is still working good today and running cool.

No console errors or disk read errors yet.

another plus for adding the posterboard over the GPU is it will not let the heat rise to the dvd drive I have read a few complaint post where there's got so hot that the GPU and CPU did not cook but the GPU actually got the dvd drive too hot and caused it to fail from getting overheated from the extreme heat the GPU throws out when left stock from the heat rising off it.

But yeah even the revised consoles there putting out now are still prone to the 3rol so it dont really matter what version you have you still may be bound for the 3rol  :dunno

I've fixed three 360s so far, all with X-clamp fix kits.

The first one was mine that got the RROD. I applied the kit and let it over heat to reflow the solder joints or what ever its meant to do. Worked 1st time, has been fine for 4 months so far

I also used a x-clamp kit on an elite and a normal 360 that had both stopped outputting video but still output audio with no red lights. I read somewhere that someone had to keep opening their xbox and pressing down on the GPU heatsink to get a picture back so I figured that an x-clamp kit would permanently apply extra pressure to the GPU. Anyway I used the kit on both and they both seem fine. I didn't bother to let the 360's overheat as I didn't think it was necessary for this fix.

My son's 360's DVD drive went out today. It's about 18 months old. Looks like the warranty only covers RRoD, I guess I'll call them tomorrow to confirm. Failing that, I'll have to replace the DVD drive.

what seems to be the problem with the dvd drive?

not to make it worse but are you aware you cannot just swap them out with another like the original xbox?

The DVD drive was grinding. Now it does nothing.

I have read that you can swap out the drives so long as you use an identical model of drive plus swap the logic board from the old drive.

I found an identical drive on Ebay. We'll see if the swap is successful.

It was a royal PITA to open that case.

It was a royal PITA to open that case.

I found a video on YouTube where some kid did it in 3 minutes and watched it a few times.  With a tiny precision flathead screwdriver, I had mine popped open pretty quick.

The warranty sticker just fell off without tearing, which caused much chuckling.  It really does feel like an accomplishment when you have that sucker open though, doesn't it?

You can grab an opening tool from Deal Extreme for $3.00, but it'll take a month to arrive.

I have the opening tool and I can have a 360 cracked open in less than 2 minutes.  For my fix it took less than 45 minutes total.  That is including dismantling and the 15 to 20 minute cooking time to overheat the GPU and have it back together again.  Once you've done a couple fixes it just gets easier and easier...

I think the Elite's case is different from a normal 360. It only required a torx screwdriver and a flat head screwdriver to pry stuff with. One half of the case screws to the 360, and the other half of the case snaps on to the first half with tabs and slots. Then the top and bottom snap on, then the hard drive attaches. No opening tool required.

All of the 360s I have opened (two normal and one elite) have been identical in opening. Small flat screwdriver to pop open the tabs at the back (there is definitely a knack to it). A T10 torx driver for the case screws and a T8 torx driver for the x-clamp screws and led ring/power plate. I've found the best way to take the x-clamps off it to use some wire end cutters like these to pull the clamps off rather than prise them with a screwdriver:

Isn't that supposed to be there for fire safety? I'd rather my 360 melt than my house...

Anyway, I got mine back last week and they sent a new discontinued model, manufactured in November of 2008. Runs great, quiet DVD drive and al.

the opening tools are junk and easily bendable just get the front loose and pry it back by pulling up and it will pop right off it sounds and feels like it would break but it does not and it is the quikest way to open it but for the tabs on the back just pry it up and it will pop off with no tools I pull the outer shells off with no tools at all for the white part and I use the same bit for the inner screws to get the grey sides off and never had anything break bend crease etc.

the grinding more then likely is a ceased spindle motor or some of the drive's eject gears teeth have chipped off and it no longer ejects or the lasers guide teeth came off and it stays in one spot but the description of no longer works dont tell me much becuase I am not sure if it dont read disk only or it is not spinning disk or it dont eject it dont make a noise it does nothing at all etc.

otherwise I could probably tell you what is wrong with it.

also do not power it on without the drive connected.

Well... it didn't last.  I honestly think that the ANA/HANA chip is gone on this box.  I'm going to go pick up a new box and sell this one.

I successfully swapped the dvd drive in my Elite. I ordered a replacement drive that had the exact same firmware as my drive, swapped the logic board from the old drive into the new drive, reassembled the box, and it worked perfectly.

Well its been about 6 months since I fixed mine but I just got the RROD again  :timebomb:

Jut had a hard day at work, the dentist (woot!), 2 hours of packing stuff before I move house and a couple of hours of woodwork. Thought I would fire up the 360 for some COD4 pwnage and bam, RROD at the end of the first game. Talk about timing  :(

I would fix it now but I dont have any thermal paste, Ill have to pick some up tomorrow.
