Title: Weird screen orientation question
Post by: VespaGuy on January 26, 2009, 05:23:23 pm
I currently have a cocktail unit that uses Mala for a vertical menu. If you were to look at the monitor from above, player one is on the right and player two is on the left. The "front" of the cabinet is at the top of the monitor, and the "back" of the cabinet (with visible door hinges) is at the bottom of the monitor. At the time I built it, I didn't think there would be any issues since I was only running vertical games, but now I may have hit a snag...

I'd now like to add another control (a trackball) to one of the longer sides of the table. The problem is that the bottom of the monitor faces the "back" of the cocktail table. I'd really need to mount the new controller to the "front" of the cabinet, which would mean that I'd need the horizontal menu to actually be flipped upside-down, while the vertical menu needs to remain in the same left-right configuration.

To simplify, is there a way to create switchable menus for two gamelists - one menu for vertical  games oriented with top on the left and the bottom on the right, and another menu for horizontal games that is upside down (top at bottom and bottom at top).

I'm probably not much help, but I thought that mala can do this out of the box.
Create 2 lists, one for verticals, one for horizontals.
Set up your mala controls to switch the lists whenever someone presses a button on any of the CPs you have.

If the list for horizontal just comes up upsidedown the first time, you can rotate the list view until it's correct.
(right click on the gamelist and rotate it there)
It should keep those settings the next time the list is changed to.

At least that's the way I anticipate it should work.  I haven't messed with that stuff in awhile, so I can't point you to the exact settings to work with, but yes, you should be able to do exactly what you're thinking of doing. (I've been thinking of doing the same thing)

Thanks for the help NOP, but I'm still stuck.

I have two lists, and I mapped a button to "switch orientation". When I open MALA, I am greeted with my vertical menu (top is at left, bottom of menu at right of monitor). Now, I press the key to "switch orientation" and and I get the horizontal menu, which is upright (top at top of monitor, bottom at bottom of monitor). But, thanks to no foresight, I need the menu to be upside-down. At this point I can "flip orientation" to get the menu the way I'd like, but when I switch back to the vertical menu it is also flipped (top is at right, bottom is at left of monitor).

Any other suggestions?

Try using the cocktail mapping mode

Or in the next version you will be able to set a key to a certain orientation 0, 90, 180, 270
